About Benedicte

My love of language, be it French or English, has led me through a lifelong career as a linguist: teacher, editor, writer, translator, and lecturer. I have helped writers reach their potential, and have reviewed translations so the meaning is clear and unmistakable. I've learned and taught a handful of foreign languages, and am familiar with the struggles faced in the process. My own years of higher education have led me to respect and value hard work combined with strategy and fun. My work in the classroom, as well as a high end interpreter and translator, has resulted in a relentless demand for accuracy.

I specialize in French and English, and love it when my students suddenly grasp a new concept of grammar, organize their thoughts on the page, or just speak with confidence. I love to laugh at error, and use it to improve. My method is to keep it challenging, and fun, incorporating the student's interests in their English, or French, written or oral expression.

I am a native speaker of French, educated in France and the U.S., and have lived in francophone countries such as Madagascar, Switzerland, and Algeria. I minored in French in college, and then pursued my Master's in France, writing my thesis in French. I have taught French at Arcadia University and at community college, as well as at Berlitz when I was a college student. I have worked as a French language consultant for the federal government, translating, interpreting, and reviewing translations for quality and accuracy. Like most native French, I love discussing the language and points of grammar. I've also learned four foreign languages, and understand the hurdles and stumbling blocks of language learning.

Writing a PhD dissertation is no small feat of writing and proofreading. I have had a career of translating foreign languages into English for the federal courts, where accuracy is crucial. I have also been a quality reviewer of translated documents to avoid any and all misunderstanding. I am a stickler for detail, knowing how much depends on it. Apart from having published two books and numerous articles, I have also edited other people's writing, from novels to academic papers in high school and college. As a college professor and lecturer, I am also very versed in public speaking, and love to teach.

Being retired, I have maximum availability and flexibility in my schedule. I can tutor either in person or online, and can work out a combination to suit topical needs. My rate is $60/hour for in-person, and $40/hour for online tutoring. I service Delaware and Chester counties, as well as Philadelphia.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have not only written a PhD dissertation, three books, and a long list of academic articles, but have for years edited others writers. Additionally, I worked as a quality reviewer of documents going to federal court. As a translator myself, as well as a reviewer of translations, I am trained to make the written word as clear as possible, without any room for misinterpretation, to render it strong and persuasive. I know the techniques, and love to pass them on.

French

I was raised bilingual with French and English, traveling throughout the francophone world: Madagascar, Algeria, Switzerland, France and the U.S. I completed an undergraduate degree in the U.S., then a Master's in France, and a PhD in anthropology in the U.S. (Univ of Pennsylvania). I have taught spoken French at Berlitz, and college French at Arcadia University and a local community college. I also worked as an interpreter for the Department of Justice, and was a quality reviewer for document translations going to court. I love discussing language issues. I have also learned and taught four other foreign languages, and know the challenges and hurdles that face the foreign language learner.

Grammar

I always tell my students that the way they speak reflects their level of education and can make all the difference in a job interview. I have not only edited my own and other writers' work, but have worked as a quality reviewer of documents going to court. I explained grammar concepts to translators and linguists needing to present materials with no room for misunderstanding. People are often surprised to see how a comma, or lack thereof, can alter the meaning of a sentence. I have raised my children and grandchildren to understanding the importance of using proper grammar to market themselves in the world. I love to debate grammar issues.

Proofreading

Quality controller of legal document translations for federal court, I have also proofread academic papers and novels for writers. I am a published author, and as a translator, I have to be dead on for accuracy. I assist professionals in letter-writing.

Public Speaking

As a professor, I have experience lecturing to large groups. I have also done public presentations at academic conferences and universities. I have assisted others in preparing public presentations. I have also taught classes and made cultural presentations to federal employees.

Reading

To read actively and selectively is a skill learned not through osmosis, but with practice and guidance, and that is what I offer my students. Reading skills developed young translate into writing skills needed at the high school level. As a PhD student, I had to read massive amounts of material, and even took an Evelyn Wood class to help with speed reading, which I have used and perfected ever since. As a professor, I had to review yet another mass of material to keep up with the scholarship and select readings for my classes. I can help with increasing speed and developing strategies to improve comprehension.

Vocabulary

As a published writer, editor, learner of many languages, and having prepared and taken many language examinations, I have a wide range of advanced vocabulary. I also have studied many ways to widen one's vocabulary base, and believe it is one of the basics for improving reading comprehension and generally preparing for college tests. As a writer, I believe using just the right word is crucial.

Writing

I have been teaching writing skills to students from 2nd grade through college level. These technical skills, when mastered young, can really make a difference in high school and beyond. I have written a PhD dissertation, published two books and numerous academic articles. I have worked as a quality reviewer of document translations. I have experience writing letters for business professionals. I have translation experience from multiple languages into English, creating legal court documents which have to be absolutely correct and accurate. I have edited other people's writing, from novels to academic papers and letters.

Benedicte took the time to figure out just what I needed and came prepared to help me with those tough spots. She isn't afraid to push a bit, which I need, though she clearly has not forgotten how difficult it is to learn a new language and thus is sympathetic and patient. She also has a sense of humor.
