About Joanne

I am a graduate from West Chester University in Pennsylvania with a BA in Liberal Arts and a Minor in Art History. I graduated in 2002, while working full-time and attending night school for 9 years. I had a wonderful experience traveling with the Art History Department to Egypt and Greece for credits!

In 2005, I was taking Spanish classes at Inlingua Language School located in Wilmington, DE. Not long after, Inlingua asked me to be an English teacher/tutor for them. I worked with Inlingua Language School for approximately one (1) year. Global Arena Language School has now taken over Inlingua Language School and their home office is in Philadelphia, PA.

I took a TESOL Workshop at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School in 2007 and received my TESOL/ESL Certificate. I began teaching and tutoring on my own. I taught a variety of students from Sweden, China, Russia and Mexico as well as, students in my area that needed help with their English courses in high school. I truly love to teach and watch the progression of my students.

Other Skills: I use Skype frequently and I am proficient in PowerPoint, Excel and Word. I have excellent communication skills.

Travel: I have traveled to many states within the USA and participated in a Sports Camp for the children of the Pine Ridge Native American Lakota Sioux Indian Reservation in South Dakota.

In Mexico, where I now live, I have taught English to employees of a jewelry store in a new mall. Their program/teaching was customized to meet their needs in helping them communicate with their English speaking customers.

Travel Outside of the USA: Quebec city, Canada, Italy, France, Spain, Turkey, Greece, Egypt, England, Scotland, and Mexico.

I very much look forward to teaching and tutoring again!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

In the past, I had a 14-year-old student that was having trouble with his reading and comprehension. I gave him reading assignments. Each time we met, I had questions regarding the reading assignment(s) in order to quiz him. We went over vocabulary within the reading assignment(s), and I had him write a few sentences to see what he had comprehended. I also wanted to know what he liked from each reading assignment.

I found that having the student read short essays and answer questions helped tremendously and of course, going over vocabulary in which he had problems was beneficial. This helped me to know where his strengths and weaknesses were in order to improve on them.

Grammar

I recently tutored a 7 year old student for 6 months in English specifically, reading comprehension and retention, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, writing, and pronunciation.

I am now tutoring an older student with their computer skills in Excel and custom applications that they are using for work.

Microsoft Excel

I used Excel on the job and for my own use, I had previously taken a course at West Chester University and I do used tutorials on You Tube.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have used PowerPoint for my own business making profiles for rental properties. I have used PowerPoint for 6 years for my own business and prior to that for 10 years in a position at a pharmaceutical company.

Sewing

I attended Philadelphia College of Textiles & Science, which is now Philadelphia University. My major was Fashion Design. My courses at that time were learning about different with a Textiles Workshop and lab, Garment Structure, Pattern Making/Development, Math for Design just to name a few.

I did not graduate due to personal circumstances at that time, which were beyond my control. However, I did attend for 3-4 semesters.

I used to sewing most of my wardrobe and would like to start sewing again.
