LaRochelle University (Sociology and Political Science)
I've spent over 20 years and thousands of hours helping students outsmart standardized tests and improve their high school grades. In 1994, just out of college, I began tutoring SAT prep with a professional tutorial company located in Los Angeles, CA.
In a few months, when I proved myself to be a competent tutor, the company also employed me to do private tutoring for high school students and homeschool students. As a private tutor, I primarily taught high school level English and Social Studies.
Since then, I have lived and tutored in Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland and the DC area. I have contracted with a few tutoring programs, including Revolution Prep, Education Breakthroughs, and Huntington but have also worked independently. I taught SAT prep classes (with groups of 18-35 students) at St James, John Champe, Stone Bridge, Leesburg, Montgomery County and many other public and private high schools in and around the DC area. Through Revolution Prep, I also taught the Alexandria Office of Minority Achievement's SAT prep program. Since 2012, when the platform became popular, I've logged hundreds of hours of private and group online SAT, ACT and subject tutoring with students all across the US.
I am quite proud of the volunteer teaching and tutoring work I have done, as it broadened my experience as a tutor. In New York, I provided free English tutoring and SAT prep to scholarship students from former soviet countries. I also provided 4 hours per week of free SAT prep for low-income teens in the Dover School District. Through Hood College, I donated my time to teach English to university students from France, Bosnia, China and Japan. I learned a great deal about the English language after looking at from a non- native speaker's perspective.
For the benefit of my students, I like to stay one step ahead of the SAT. The test has changed a few times since I started teaching prep, so in addition to keeping up with the College Board's "official" information, I like to take the test myself several times a year. I consistently score above 2300 - proof that practice makes perfect!
I have compiled my own SAT prep material, but I am very familiar with Princeton Review, College Board, Barron's, Kaplan and other programs, and will work with any program my student feels comfortable with. My typical student sees an increase of 200-300 points on the SAT. Many of my students have increased over 400 points in just 6 weeks (about 30 hours) of prep.
In addition to teaching SAT/ACT prep, I also tutor elementary, middle school and high school academic subjects. My favorites are English and Algebra. I have worked with home-schooled students, public and private high school students and, of course, my own 3 children (ages 10,15 and 18). I pride myself on my ability to establish rapport and to motivate students to push beyond frustration to a point of confidence in their subjects. The most rewarding part for me is sharing that "A-HA!" moment with a student who finally "gets it."
Students appreciate my patient and thorough approach, and I always get the highest evaluations from schools, and more importantly, from my students! I am versatile and experienced in a variety of subjects and I genuinely love learning and teaching. I am the perfect math tutor for a student who finds math frustrating and/or needs repetition or time to take problems step-by-step. I excel at helping students who are overwhelmed by reading by showing them how to actively engage with the reading to increase comprehension and focus.
I am qualified to tutor in a variety of subjects and I work with students who attend public, private, cyber or home school. I can offer help with a short term need, or on an ongoing basis.

Jennifer was well-prepared and had useful materials to review with my daughter to identify her strengths and weaknesses. My daughter found Jennifer's tutoring very helpful and appreciates her knowledge, patience and professionalism
My student didn't want to be tutored and was reluctant to receive the help he needed. Jennifer made a real connection with my student and now he thinks that the tutoring is a good idea now.
Jennifer is doing a great job in assessing our son's abilities and areas of needed improvement. He looks forward to the sessions.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I took courses in Crime and Criminology as part of the requirements for my B.A. in Sociology. I also studied Criminal Justice and Criminal Procedure with Professor Dimino at Widener Law School. As part of my recent studies, I sat in on over 30 hours of criminal hearings in the District and Circuit Courts of Maryland.
I've never scored below 730 on the English section of the SAT and a had a perfect score on writing and reading on the ACT. I edit and proofread articles and books for a law professor. I have successfully tutored many students in literature, grammar, vocabulary and writing. I teach essay writing workshops and am also qualified to score the old SAT test essays.
My college major required multiple political science courses. I regularly teach and tutor American Government and several years ago I taught a high school level political science course. I have a very large library of political science books at home and I currently audit a Constitutional Law course at Widener University.
I have a B.A. in Sociology. I tutor this subject occasionally at a high school level, and more frequently at a college/university level. Most of my sociology students seek my help to refine their research methods and to organize and write their research or seminar papers. I worked as a research assistant to Dr. Donahue, a Sociology professor in Pittsburgh, PA.
