About Patricia

Education is more than just learning facts; it is learning how to learn, solve problems and understand the interconnectedness of our world. My varied background of the sciences, literacy and the arts gives me a unique skill set to help your student understand, not just know. Eighteen years' experience as a public school teacher and sixteen years as a piano and voice teacher, as well as experience in running businesses, managing legal document production, computer networking and a deep love of hand craft allow me to draw from wide experience to put facts in context and help your student see connections. Understanding how facts fit together creates a framework that allows your student to apply his/her knowledge to their life and career. Understanding fires motivation and curiosity, making students life-long learners.

I believe it is important to teach the entire student, ensuring that possible deficits in ancillary subjects such as reading, do not keep students from success in other areas. To this end, students who need help with foundational skills such as reading or arithmetic will also receive tutoring in those areas, with approval of the parent or guardian. I firmly believe that all students can be successful, but that each of us learns and develops at a pace that is unique to the individual. It is my purpose to provide support so that your student can progress and achieve to the best of their ability.

Materials used in tutoring sessions will include 'hands-on' manipulatives whenever possible, games, demonstrations and other techniques to teach to your individual student's preferred learning style. In addition to materials used in the tutoring sessions, enrichment materials are provided on my website.

Students and teachers must work well together in order to achieve at the highest level. Therefore, I offer a complimentary first "get to know each other" consultation session so that you and your student can have a taste of how we will work together.

Because everyone's time is valuable, I have a 24-hour cancellation policy. However, I do offer make-up sessions when possible.

I look forward to meeting with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

General Music

I have played piano, including study at the college level, for over fifty years. In addition, I have studied music theory, conducting and voice performance all at the college level. I have taught voice and piano for over twenty years. My performance experience includes two solo voice recitals and many concerts, operas, operettas and musicals in both vocal and instrumental capacities.

ISEE

The Independent School Entrance Exam covers mainly math and Language Arts skills, as are other standardized exams such as the SSAT. The wide range of academic areas in which I am formally certified in three states (PA, CA and NM) means that I bring a unique ability to engage my students in areas as diverse as chemistry and music history. My science background required a strong math component, and so although I am not a state certified teacher in math, I am well qualified to tutor math topics through geometry.

Music History

I have studied music theory, music history, conducting, piano and voice performance all at the college level. I have taught voice and piano for over twenty years. My performance experience includes two solo voice recitals and many concerts, operas, operettas and musicals in both vocal and instrumental capacities.

Study Skills

As a high school teacher for nearly twenty years, I have dealt with students with a wide range of academic and intellectual skills, but few who possessed adequate study skills. I developed many techniques that I taught my students to improve their academic success, including the use of the Cornell note taking system, the use of mnemonic devices, time management and the use of flow charts to break large projects into manageable steps and track workflow and progress.

Voice (Music)

Privately, I studied voice for nearly fifteen years, my teachers chosen from professors at the Lamont School of Music, University of Denver, the University of New Mexico, New Mexico State University and the University of Colorado at Denver. I have studied music theory, conducting and voice performance all at the graduate level. I have taught voice and piano for over twenty years. My performance experience includes two solo voice recitals and many concerts, operas, operettas and musicals in both vocal and instrumental capacities.
