About Patricia

Education is more than just learning facts; it is learning how to learn, solve problems and understand the interconnectedness of our world. My varied background of the sciences, literacy and the arts gives me a unique skill set to help your student understand, not just know. Eighteen years' experience as a public school teacher and sixteen years as a piano and voice teacher, as well as experience in running businesses, managing legal document production, computer networking and a deep love of hand craft allow me to draw from wide experience to put facts in context and help your student see connections. Understanding how facts fit together creates a framework that allows your student to apply his/her knowledge to their life and career. Understanding fires motivation and curiosity, making students life-long learners.

I believe it is important to teach the entire student, ensuring that possible deficits in ancillary subjects such as reading, do not keep students from success in other areas. To this end, students who need help with foundational skills such as reading or arithmetic will also receive tutoring in those areas, with approval of the parent or guardian. I firmly believe that all students can be successful, but that each of us learns and develops at a pace that is unique to the individual. It is my purpose to provide support so that your student can progress and achieve to the best of their ability.

Materials used in tutoring sessions will include 'hands-on' manipulatives whenever possible, games, demonstrations and other techniques to teach to your individual student's preferred learning style. In addition to materials used in the tutoring sessions, enrichment materials are provided on my website.

Students and teachers must work well together in order to achieve at the highest level. Therefore, I offer a complimentary first "get to know each other" consultation session so that you and your student can have a taste of how we will work together.

Because everyone's time is valuable, I have a 24-hour cancellation policy. However, I do offer make-up sessions when possible.

I look forward to meeting with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have taught for over 20 years and am certified in language arts; I also hold a certification in technical writing and am a published author. In addition, I am well versed in test-taking skills specific to the ACT. I have taught for over 20 years and am certified in language arts and have received specialized training in reading in the content area. This enables me to give students particular help with reading nonfiction. I also hold a certification in technical writing. In addition, I am well versed in test-taking skills specific to the ACT. My emphasis with students is identifying their strengths and weaknesses, the remediation of weaknesses and practicing test-taking strategies that maximize each individual's strengths.

ACT Science

I am well versed in test-taking skills specific to the ACT. In particular, the ACT Science exam is not truly a science test; rather, it is a reading test in the science subject area.

Algebra 1

I have taught mainly science and math for over 20 years. In particular, I help my students understand why an operation works, not merely perform steps by rote. Understanding math means being able to apply it, whether in word problems or science labs.

Astronomy

I have taught earth/space science for over 20 years. Astronomy is often the science that younger students are attracted to first; my emphasis with older students is to keep that excitement alive while helping them navigate the math, physics and chemistry necessary for deeper understanding.

Ecology

Given today's critical ecological issues, an understanding of how the earth works and man's actions affect it is of vital importance.

Elementary Math

I help my students understand why an operation works, not merely perform steps by rote. Understanding math means being able to apply it, whether in word problems or daily life.

Elementary Science

I have taught various areas of science for over 20 years, including chemistry, physics, earth/space and environmental science. My emphasis lies in helping students understand the fundamentals principles of science, not rote memorization of facts and formulas. I have taught earth/space and environmental science for over 20 years. A graduate of NM Institute of Mining and Technology, I have continued to study earth's systems and their interconnections for another 40 years. Prealgebra

I have taught mainly science and math for over 20 years. In particular, I help my students understand why an operation works, not merely perform steps by rote.
