Hi! My name is Jackie and I work full-time as financial services professional. As much as this profession pays my bills, I would rather teach! I have a B.S.Ed. in Secondary Education-English, with a minor in Psychology. However, when I graduated, I knew it would be nearly impossible to find a teaching job in Pennsylvania (it still is!). I found myself in the financial services profession, but I would like to transition out of the industry. My real passion is teaching English to adult immigrants to the United States. I have had the pleasure of tutoring two students, one from Saudi Arabia, and one from China, as a volunteer, but I'm ready to do this every day for a living. As an addition to my credentials, I'm enrolled in an ESL Workshop at the University of Pennsylvania to learn more about TESOL techniques.
I value our immigrant population and I have such strong respect for anyone who comes to the U.S. to start a new life. By helping you with your English skills, it makes me happy to know that I am giving you the tools you need to succeed in our wonderful country and that I am investing in our country's future.
I like to focus on conversation in English, as I find many immigrants have a solid foundation in English grammar and writing. The most difficult thing my students have expressed to me is, well, expressing themselves in English! During conversation, I may use words you have never heard before in English. I like to use those opportunities to look up the word I've used in the dictionary and explain it to you. This is how you build your vocabulary! There will be times I may want to focus on grammar and writing, depending on your skill level or needs. I also like to talk about culture and I can help with resume writing, if you are looking for a job.
I'm willing to not only be your English tutor, but your personal ambassador to the US!
Please feel free to reach out! I look forward to hearing from you.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
