About Deborah

I am a special education teacher with over twenty years of experience in the elementary grades and pre-school. I concentrate on guiding my students to make their own discoveries, helping them reach their academic potential and goals. The importance of good reading and math skills can not be over stated in furthering a student's education. A strong foundation in these areas makes learning new subjects an enjoyable experience.

I am a strong believer in practicing new material through homework, games, art, and manipulatives. I will assign homework with meaningful goals and to increase understanding of material covered during the session. I will document the student's achievements with periodic assessments, progress reports, quizzes, and tests. In return I ask both parents and students to give me feedback about the lessons.

Time is important to everyone, therefore; I am requesting that you notify me twenty-four hours (24 hrs) in advance if you need to cancel or change a tutoring session. I will return the courtesy if I need to make any changes to my schedule.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you reach your academic goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am a Special Education teacher and have worked with students with this condition. I have found that alternating sit down tasks with movement activities works well. The use of reward and progress charts, have also helped students reach their goals, especially when they have a hand in creating the charts.

Aspergers

I am a special education teacher and have worked with students with this condition. I have been able to use their interest in a specific area(s) to their advantage. Programing the information they need to learn into games, worksheets, and stories that incorporate their favorite subject(s). The use of rewards and progress charts that the student has helped develop are also helpful in reaching their academic goals.

Autism

I am a special education teacher and have worked with Autism students in the past. Being patient, respectful, and caring have been the best tools in helping these students reach their academic goals. It is important to know when to push and when to back off. I have found that even though the student may not appear to be engaged in what is going on, they are getting all if not more information than their peers. Flexibility, consistency, and understanding of the student's needs has also been helpful when working with these students.

Dyslexia

I am a dyslexic. I have spent my entire life dealing with this disability. Learning different methods, tricks, and ways of dealing with the printed word and numbers has become second nature for me and I am happy to share what I have learned with others. I was able to reach my goals and so can you.

Elementary (K-6th)

Having a degree in Special Education, I have worked in the public school system as a teacher, support personnel, and an aide. I enjoy working with the younger grades, helping guide students to discover and understand the world around them is a privilege. Even though I have been doing this for over twenty years, there isn't a day that goes by that I don't learn something from my students as they are learning things from me. Teaching is a give and take relationship for all.

Elementary Math

Taught fourth grade math while teaching special education class in the public school.

Handwriting

I took and passed a course called 'Handwriting Without Tears'. It covered the skills needed for writing, both manuscript and cursive. It also dealt with training muscles in the hands and body, and proper eye movement. Gross motor and fine motor activities were also used to help with writing skills. Not only do these skills work with writing they also help with reading skills.

Hard Of Hearing

I have worked with hard of hearing children in overnight camp and school situations. Making, sometimes simple, accommodations like, sitting closer to the speaker, generating hand cues, or making a tape recording of the class have helped students. I have a working knowledge of sign language and have used it to help hard of hearing students reach their academic goals.

Phonics

Being a special education teacher I have a lot of experience with helping students learn how to decode words and become better writers. Using a variety of games to practice these skills has been the most popular and helpful way to achieve those goals.

Sign Language

I began teaching myself sign language while in high school in order to communicate with a family member. I also taught a sign language class for college students. I spent a summer at an overnight camp for the deaf and hard of hearing, where I was one of three counselors that signed.

Special Needs

I have a special education degree from West Chester University. I have over twenty years of teaching experience. I have worked as a special education teacher in the public schools. I have been a substitute special education teacher in the public schools.
