I worked as an HR Manager and then a Communications Director and then qualified in England as an ESL teacher in 2001. I have taught ESL to students from all over the world. I know what it is like to live outside my home country: I lived in Portugal, Spain, England, and have now returned home to the USA. I also can relate to the experience of learning a new language: I became fluent in Spanish while living in Spain and subsequently taught Spanish to high school and adult students. Concurrently, I was a cross-cultural trainer for corporations sending employees to work outside their home countries. I taught these managers skills for living and working in their new adoptive country.
I have experience teaching all levels of ESL, both one-on-one and in a classroom setting. My specialty areas are conversational English, business English, and advanced ESL. I am sensitive to students' individual needs, cultural backgrounds, and learning styles. Having just completed my M.A. in Global Leadership, I am well-placed to help MBA and other graduate students with academic writing.
The Cambridge CELTA is the best ESL certification program in the world, and I completed it with honors. My gift is connecting with my students and perceiving their needs even when they are not aware of them. My attentiveness, listening skills, and ability to connect with students facilitate their ease of learning.
An experienced HR Manager and Communications Director, I understand organizational culture, how organizations work and how teams function. When completing my M.A. in Global Leadership, I delved deeply (on an academic level AND practically, in real organizational settings) into conflict transformation, collaborative leadership, managing change, and fostering creativity and innovation on your team.
I enjoy tutoring and seeing people grow in their knowledge and ability. If you think my skills and background would be a good fit for your needs, I would love to hear from you. I am very open to questions and willing to talk with you about your needs to help you decide if I am the tutor you are seeking. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
