Hi!

My name is Dee, and I currently live in Macungie, PA. I'm a recent transplant from NYC.

I am an admitted attorney in NY, and hold a BA in psychology (pre-med). For the past three years I have been a dedicated homeschool educator to my son, schooling him for 5th, 6th and 7th grades. During this time I have taken a child who just "didn't get math" and "hated it" and turned him into a highly proficient student in math who has consistently scored within the 90-98 percentile in math on state exams and will be entering "Honors" math when he returns to school this fall.

My philosophy is simple: break down math so that it is digestible. I always tell my son, "No one can swallow a steak whole. One must cut it up and chew it piece by piece".

My methods are also simple: math is just a series of building blocks. By focusing, understanding and mastering the basics any student can handle the complex.

Also, I've discovered something truly amazing from my years of practicing law. That is, the same amount and level of logic that is used in law to reason and make legal arguments can be used in math with remarkable results.

Therefore, math isn't just about memorizing numbers and formulas but it's about thinking in a logical way. Once a student "gets" that, I've seen some really amazing things happen. Suddenly, this light bulb goes off and everything makes sense.

In law school they called it IRAC: Issue. Rule. Conclusion. Simple, right? When given a math problem a student must first identify the issue (what the question is asking for). Then they must recall the mathematical rule or formula. Next apply or plug in the information in a question to the rule/formula so that that they can arrive at a conclusion. I stress working a problem out step by step so that a student can understand and "see" how they arrive at the logical conclusion (or answer) to a problem.

My focus is not to just arrive to the answer, but to understand the journey it takes to get there.

If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
