I am a Special Education teacher and GED instructor with 10+ years in teaching. I work with students in elementary math, algebra, reading, and language arts in grades Kindergarten to 10th grade. I believe a special education teacher must have excellent communication skills so that they can interact with the students and parents. They must have patience and be able to understand the abilities of each student. I believe each student learns in different ways. I use several teaching tools to enhance student learning such as chunking, scaffolding, sensory, repetition, mapping, learning games, and flash cards. Once a student has confidence that they can learn a difficult task, they have the confidence to learn anything, and will be successful in the classroom.

Karen did a great job tutoring my son on his homework and reading. He is looking forward to having more sessions with her and also loved that he got to choose a sticker as his reward for doing a great job.
Our experience with Karen T. has been so positive I cannot recommend her highly enough. She was able to bring our son to the point of his achieving his G.E.D. over the course of a single year. She knew exactly how to improve his skills in each subject. Her teaching is full of warmth, patience, humor and kindness. Karen kept in close touch with me as their work developed. She also maintained her own connection directly with Joshua. She understood his need for someone to believe in him. None of Joshua's previous school settings had ever done this for him. We have absolutely no reservations in our recommendation of Karen T.
Karen makes it fun to learn and took an interest in getting to know my son as well! I am looking forward to seeing how much he improves in the areas that he struggles!!
Karen was friendly from the start. Appreciated how she spoke to my son, and patiently explained steps to a problem.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been teaching GED for the past five years at my local vocational school. Many of the adult students have learning disabilities that caused them to quit high school and I use my skills as a special education teacher to help them succeed. It is a very rewarding job because I help these adults pass the GED test and be admitted to colleges and technical schools where they pursue their dream jobs.
