About Justin

With respect to my educational background, I graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Sociology (Criminal Justice concentration) from Walsh University in 2005. I continued my studies at Youngstown State University, where I earned a Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice. In Fall 2013, I earned my Ph.D. in Criminology from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

I have been teaching at the university level for over 6 years. In particular, I began teaching in 2008 as a graduate teaching assistant (instructor of record) at Youngstown State University in the Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences Department. I continued my teaching career at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) as a faculty member in the Criminology Department. I then joined Mansfield University in the fall of 2013 as an Assistant Professor in the Criminal Justice Administration Department. I've taught multiple criminal justice-related classes, including the following: Introduction to Criminal Justice, Survey of Corrections, Judicial Criminal Process, Crime and Delinquency Prevention, Contemporary Issues in Criminal Justice, Law Social Control & Society, Criminal Justice Policy, and Delinquency and the Juvenile Justice System.

My primary objective is to innovatively educate and inspire students to my fullest potential as so many educators have done for me throughout the years. As a current educator, my goal lies beyond requiring students to simply memorize certain facts and important pieces of information. Instead, I seek to maximize student learning and potential through a recurrent process of preparation, application, thoughtful consideration, and experimentation. This process helps to challenge students to learn and develop critical thinking skills. It also encourages them to thoughtfully question, analyze, and reflect on material rather than simply consuming and accepting information at face value.

Effective teaching, in my opinion, is a process that goes well beyond simply preparing and presenting information to students. It involves retaining a level of thought, awareness, and understanding that is much more profound than basic material that can be found in a textbook. It also involves maintaining an unsurpassed level of genuine compassion, care, and concern for the learning needs and interests of students. An effective teacher must also have the ability to lead and create an atmosphere that is conducive to student learning. It should also help to enhance the writing, communication, and problem-solving skills of students. As an educator, I encourage students to challenge themselves in terms of learning and applying new information. I am cognizant of the fact that students will bring with them varying degrees of knowledge and expertise. With this in mind, I actively challenge students to be receptive toward learning new information and sharing with others what they know. This approach, in my opinion, allows students to surpass any expectations that they have set for themselves.

In addition to my teaching and professional activities, I enjoy learning, networking with students, sports, and spending time with my family.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
