I began tutoring somewhat "officially" my senior year in high school, in German. I also did some outside tutoring in math. I was a computer programmer for almost ten years, then obtained my teaching certification from Susquehanna University. I substituted in the area for two years then moved for a full-time position teaching math, physics, and computer science. I tutored for the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit for two years while working on my second Bachelor's degree in computer science which I earned (cum laude) in 2013.

My degree in physics and continuing education gives me the knowledge of the subject. Part of my physics degree required chemistry, which I also enjoy and started my second year as a substitute teacher.

I really enjoy helping people learn and expand their horizons. I try to provide an environment where people feel safe to explore and be wrong but work together to correct process or concepts. I prefer to work in quieter environments, but always with other adults in proximity. I obtained my most recent clearances in the summer of 2020.

I look forward to working with people who want to learn, work, discover, be amazed, and have fun. I like to learn about the person I'm working with to relate the material to what is familiar for the student.

C,

C

As a computer programmer, I spent about 3 years programming in C. Most of my undergraduate work in computer science courses at Susquehanna University were in C (As and Bs). At Bloomsburg University, the embedded programming course was in C and assembly language (A). I provided some informal tutoring to classmates in the embedded programming course. I kept almost all of the textbooks for these courses.
C++,

C++

While working on my BS in computer science at Bloomsburg University, one of the courses was in C++. I achieved an A in the course. On occasion, I helped other students in the class in understanding particulars of C++ that are different from Java (in which most of the "core" classes were taught). For my last full-time position as a computer programmer, I created a couple programs in C#.NET which is similar to C++. While at Susquehanna University, working on my BS in physics, I took a course that was in C++ also. Most of the other computer courses I took at Susquehanna were in C.
COBOL,

COBOL

As a computer programmer, I programmed in COBOL II for about 3 years, having been hired because I had COBOL II in my undergraduate work at Susquehanna University. Most of the projects that were in COBOL II for various clients, I finished ahead of schedule, and exceeded quality standards. I kept my textbook and provided a little tutoring to classmates, and, later, a co-worker.
Fortran,

Fortran

My first programming course was half BASIC and half FORTRAN77. The second course was half FORTRAN and half Pascal. I programmed in FORTRAN77 for a research project, and later provided sample solutions to programming homework questions. When I transferred to Susquehanna University, my one independent research project I wrote in FORTRAN77.

Reviews

Really enjoyed working with Brian!

We were looking for someone to review math skills with our daughter over the summer (esp. algebra and geometry) and to help her prepare for pre-calculus in the fall. Brian took the time to assess our daughter's learning style and personality, which really helped to make the most of the tutoring experience. He covered all of the topics we requested, gave appropriate homework assignments, and allowed plenty of time for questions and review. We really enjoyed his sense of humor, too! Our daughter returned to school feeling confident in her math skills and without the usual "I forgot everything over the summer" frustration! We highly recommend Brian!
