As a screenwriter and former professor of film I'm able to tutor in all forms of writing, film, literature and public speaking. My students have found me to be genuinely interested in their learning and have been most enthusiastic about our one on one story-telling conferences when I've been able to devote my full and undivided attention to their work. I'm passionate about teaching and writing and will be patient but also motivating and inspiring for you to do your very best. My students will come to enjoy learning and improving as I once did myself when I needed tutoring for high school French and had a tutor who helped restore my confidence. I've worked with thousands of students of all ages and backgrounds and no matter what the course was that I was teaching, they all came away better writers and thinkers.
In addition to my collegiate teaching credentials - I've taught at Syracuse University's Newhouse School of Public Communication, the University of South Carolina, the University of Virginia, Nathaniel Hawthorne University, New England College, and acommunity college or two - I worked in Division I college sports for nearly 10 years as an academic advisor for student-athletes and had success stories too numerous to mention. This means I worked with many student-athletes who had a variety of learning disabilities and helped them either overcome those learning difficulties (through improved class attendance and better study habits) or found them the appropriate academic support within the university which then provided them with assistance in note and test taking.
When not writing and away from my desk my other passions include fly fishing, pumping iron and riding my Fat Boy. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I've been teaching for most of my professional career and among the classes I've taught were several adult education public speaking courses for Nathaniel Hawthorne College. I'm a frequent public speaker in front of the classroom and I'm an excellent judge of effective communication and public speaking.
I'm a screenwriting professor and screenwriter myself. I've written a novel and my MFA from the University of Virginia is in fiction writing. I've taught all forms of writing from non-fiction to biography to short stories to basic composition.
In other words, I can tutor in writing with the best.
