About Abby

Hi! My name's Abby, and I just graduated from Penn. I started tutoring in high school about seven years ago, and have since had tutoring experience in both volunteer and paid conditions. I first tutored for the SATs after taking them myself, and then volunteered at my high school for the National Honor Society. I have also tutored in West Philadelphia (while attending college at the University of Pennsylvania) with a volunteer group called Project Breakthrough, which works with underprivileged, highly motivated students. I've now been tutoring off and on through WyzAnt for about five years.

Though all experiences have involved helping students learn to feel confident in their abilities, each circumstance has been different; as a result, I am quick to adapt to each student's needs.

Students should feel assured there will be no negativity and no judgment when working with me, since there is neither need nor room in learning environments for either.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I was a student tutor in high school for algebra, and always helped friends with their homework. After high school, I started tutoring younger students during college for four years. Most of my student requests have been for math, and many of those have specifically been for algebra.

English

I took two AP English classes in high school and scored a 5 on each exam. I won several English and writing awards while in high school, and I also took advanced literature and writing courses at the University of Pennsylvania.

French

I majored in French at Penn, and I have stayed for three months (cumulatively) in France.

Study Skills

I have tutored techniques to study for the SATs in the past. Other times, I have tutored students whose main concern was their inability to find a study method that worked for them. I have taught note-taking techniques, study techniques such as the proper way to make flashcards, and other methods dependent on my assessment of the students' needs. I now tutor in West Philadelphia (while also attending college at the University of Pennsylvania).

Writing

I took many advanced writing and literature courses at Penn, and scored an 800 on the SAT writing section.
