In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have taught reading in the Elementary school for several years and have recently earned my ESL certification. The best method to teach ELLs depends on their level of proficiency. This is accomplished by immersing them in cooperative learning groups supported by visual aids and variety of graphic organizers. Teacher's modeling and scaffolding is very crucial in the process of acquisition.
I have been teaching phonics as one of the 5 vital components of teaching literacy in the primary/elementary grades in the last 20 years as a primary-grade teacher as well as reading specialist. Children need to be taught the sounds and their associations to letters. Once they acquire this significant skill, they can master reading, spelling and writing. Teachers must purposely and explicitly teach/model phonics within the context of authentic reading that contain words with specific vowel patterns. Words with specific patterns can be reinforced through group games such as making words.
