Along with my love of doing science, I have a strong love for teaching it as well. I am an astronomer with expertise in observational astronomy for planetary defense and in optics for instrumentation. Along with my love of doing science, I have a strong love for teaching it as well. I have taught at the high school and undergraduate levels, but far prefer to tutor individual students who are fully engaged and dedicated to learning their material. I typically work with my students for years, often seeing them progress from Junior high through graduation. This provides continuity and stability over time, and ensures that a student who has found a tutor that matches their learning style can continue to benefit from that association. (I have no requirement, though, that students sign on for years; I do as many sessions as a student wants or needs.)

I have Masters degrees in astrophysics and observational astronomy; as such, I have taken the entire sequence of mathematics required for a graduate degree in physics. This includes, besides the entire high school math curriculum, the calculus sequence, differential equations, linear equations, and statistics and probability. In addition, I have taught and tutored in most of these for 20 years. More importantly, I have a unique ability to explain things in a way that helps students get past common sources of confusion.

In addition to the above, I have actually been a practicing scientist for over two decades, specifically doing laboratory optical research and observational astronomy. I was a planetary defense astronomer for 8 years, surveying the night sky to find asteroids that could become potential threats. There is no better way to understand science then to actually do science. I tutor astronomy and all levels of physics, with particular expertise in optics.

As a tutor, I will learn your learning style over time and tailor my explanations and solutions to your individual needs. I also can provide detailed, individual instruction via written page for an extra fee. I prefer working in two hour blocks, as I have seen that a one hour block is too short to accomplish much, especially if there are long problems with a degree of complexity. If you want to gain a deeper knowledge of your material, I am the tutor to contact. Cheers!
