About Joseph

I have worked for more than twenty years as a professional physicist working primarily in the area of materials characterization (crystal structure, chemistry, material interfaces, nanotechnology). I worked for about twelve years at the University of Houston before I took a job at Motorola in the Phoenix area. More recently, I was a laboratory manager at Penn State University where I ran a lab with over $2 million dollars worth of equipment.

I have formal classroom teaching experience both at UH and at PSU. More recently I was a summer camp instructor for Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth where I taught Principles of Engineering Design. I also have experience tutoring in math (algebra, pre-calculus, and calculus) and physics.

I learned calculus in high school and have used it in my professional work throughout most of my career. I am patient and ready to listen carefully to the student in order to understand the sources of difficulty.

I was a physics major as an undergraduate and a graduate student. I have a large collection of physics textbooks to serve as references. I even browse through them from time to time just because I enjoy refreshing my knowledge.

Please contact me to discuss any problems you might be having with math or physics. I have experience with a wide variety of undergraduate physics topics and I'm quite comfortable with basic mathematics (algebra and calculus).

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 2

I studied algebra I, algebra II and calculus in high school and continued to use these skills in college where, as a physics student, I studied complex variables, ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations, linear algebra (matrices and operators), and other advanced math topics. I have continued to use these skills in my 20+ year career as a physics researcher and teacher.

Calculus

I learned calculus in my senior year of high school and freshman year in college. As a practicing physicist and occasional tutor I have kept up my skills in the subject. In college I took other advanced math topics including complex variables, ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations, linear algebra, and a bit of differential geometry.

Physics

I have an SB in physics from MIT and a PhD in physics from UC Berkeley. I have worked as a professional physicist for Lawrence Berkeley Lab, University of Houston, Motorola, and Penn State University.
