UM Ann Arbor (Master's)
There are no bad questions! I tutor with mind and heart. I care about their success in becoming an independent learner. Often, I have found that difficulties in learning are related to the starting point and level of frustration in mastery of subject. As the student and I review together the material I can determine what concepts they have mastered and help them fill in the gaps holding them back by guiding the student's thinking. The result is that they are successful in coming up with the answers themselves. My approach is positive and builds on their self-esteem and interest in the subject. In the process, I reinforce often, the idea to the student that they are successful math/science learners. By learning to ask questions the student is learning to perform like the top students. Emphasis is put on looking at what you already know and building on that knowledge by either looking up the information for themselves or asking others for assistance. I tutor with mind and heart.
I have over 30 years' experience as a software engineer. I graduated from the University of Michigan Ann Arbor with a Master's degree in Computer Science and from University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, a Bachelor's in Computer Engineering. I have worked on everything from the Space Shuttle, debit card readers in stores, smart cards, energy grid, and flight planning for corporate jets. I enjoy talking to students about exciting careers in math, science, engineering, and the space program. Students have career interests that they need to explore and develop. Additionally, it is important to show students the relevance of real world learning with what they are learning in school. Abstract and critical thinking skills can be enhanced with quick, little fun math and science games. I enjoy the instant when a young mind gets the concept. Students teach me so many wonderful things. I usually get more out the experience than the student does. My hobbies include astronomy, physics, chess, and chemistry.
I am available to tutor in: algebra, trigonometry, geometry, calculus, chemistry, physics, astronomy and chess.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
