The Citadel (Master's)
I am a secondary social studies teacher interested in helping students excel at learning. I received my undergraduate degree from Cedar Crest College in History. I hold a master's degree in secondary social studies from The Citadel-Military College of South Carolina. For me teaching is a passion. I enjoy the opportunity to share my knowledge with students of all ages. I believe in utilizing a multitude of hands-on activities and differentiated teaching strategies in order to facilitate meaningful experiences for students of all learning styles.
I have experience teaching American history, world history, and economics. I also have experience as an elementary school tutor. In the past I have worked with students to improve their reading, vocabulary, spelling, and mathematics skills.
During my master's program I had the opportunity to complete coursework focusing on improving the reading and literacy skills of secondary students. I have created a variety of lessons and activities to improve vocabulary and fluency. To strength students reading comprehension I have utilized exercises dedicated to the identification of main ideas, sequences of events, cause and effect relationships, and constructing inferences.
I have experience working as an elementary school tutor. Utilizing the Common Core and PA State Academic standards I have designed lesson plans for remedial math and reading. For the math curriculum, I have prepared lessons focusing on addition and subtraction with regrouping, simple geometry, place value, and money. To improve students English Language Arts skills my lessons incorporated fluency checks, phonetic skills, comprehension strategies, spelling, grammar and writing.
I am interested in working with students of all ages and grade levels. Please contact me for additional details regarding my professional skills and to schedule a tutoring session. I look forward to working with you.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have prior experience working as an elementary school tutor. During the 2015-2016 academic school year I tutored a second grade student in the areas of English Language Arts and math. I have developed a variety of lesson plans following the Common Core and PA State Academic Standards. Although my current teaching certification is in the area of secondary education I have been able to apply standard educational theories and practices to the elementary curriculum. The tutoring methods that I have utilized included guided practice, student generated inquiry, fluency checks, repetition drills, and informal assessments.
