About Andrew

For a decade, I have taught German in a variety of contexts: University, Community College, Saturday School, High School and Middle School, and French in High School and Middle School. I enjoyed all of these milieus, though I found teaching Middle School to be a steadily rewarding experience due to the excitement and enthusiasm of the students. The most successful and driven high school students I ever had also started their language learning with me in Middle School. With all of my heart, I firmly believe that you take all students where they are at that given time when they are in your class, and I have also taught from that core tenet. However, I find it particularly rewarding to be there at the beginning when students first acquire the German language (or any other one). If the teacher sets the right tone, then language class can be a joy to many students for many subsequent years.

I have enjoyed a close relationship with the German language and German-speaking countries since my teenage years, when I had the opportunity to spend two summers with a family in Nuremberg and do considerable traveling in Germany and neighboring countries.

As an undergraduate student, I was able to study a year at the Universität Heidelberg on a scholarship from the Federation of German-American Women's Clubs.

While my experience with French is not as extensive, I did have the opportunity to spend a month as a teenager immersed in French with a family near Bordeaux, and have made three separate trips to Paris while in Europe. As a student in Heidelberg, I also sat in on classes in their Romance Languages department, as well as at the Institut Français (which was still open there in 1998-99.) My French coursework also includes French Literature and -Culture classes at the 300- and 400-level at the University of Delaware, and an upper level writing course at Indiana University Bloomington.

I maintain my fluency in German by regularly conversing with native speakers, reading substantially online and for my own enjoyment. I am keen on current events, and thanks to Facebook and Twitter, I can quickly "catch the pulse" of what's new in German-speaking Europe. I frequently watch German news-segments and TV shows, as well.

I am quite familiar with language acquisition and the best practices to make it happen. I did not, however, have a certificate to teacher ESL.

I am an Advanced-Mid or Advanced-High speaker of German per an ACTFL OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview). I have a NJ Certification for German and PA Certification for German and French.

Particularly in German but also in French, I have the teaching experience and the speaking proficiency to adjust to any student's needs. I am a strong believer in methods/strategies which are often called "Teaching with Comprehensible/Compelling Input" -- in short, I feel that any student learns their best with contexts and materials which are really interesting to them. That means, as well, that I prefer to include grammar in meaningful contexts. If you *just* want to drill grammar, I can help you too, but I encourage a broader approach.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

French

I have a PA Instructional Certificate for French and have taught it (as well as German) for the past 8 years.

German

I have a Bachelor in Germanic Studies and Master in Modern German Culture from Indiana University (Bloomington, Indiana).
In 2008, I took an OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview) Exam in German and was rated Advanced-Mid.
I have taught German at all levels: university, community college, high school, middle school and at a Saturday German school.
I have taken students to Germany several times, and just spent almost 4 weeks in Germany for a professional development seminar (MINT/STEM in the German classroom).
