About Sam

I'm Sam! I graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Music with an emphasis in Vocal Performance. Shortly after pursuing a graduate degree in Vocal Performance, I decided that I no longer wanted to be an Opera Singer. Over the next several years I tried out different careers (being a poker dealer was my favorite because it involved a lot of math). In time I grew to realize that no matter what I did, I always found myself teaching. My favorite part of any job became when I had an opportunity to tutor, or teach one more individuals how to do something new, see something differently, or do something better. Aside from tutoring, none of these jobs were meant to involve teaching. I decided that it was time to pursue a career in something I have loved since high school. In the coming school year I will be pursuing either a Masters in Math Education or a second Bachelors in Physics at a local university followed by a PhD in a scientific field (right now I am leaning toward Cognitive Science). Years from now my dream is to teach at the university level and to effect teaching at all levels (K-PhD). I want to tutor as much as I can, so that I can continue to learn how to be the best educator I can be.

As an avid learner of most everything, I strive to coach students in a manner that is honed to each individuals needs. My experiences as a teacher range from conducting choirs of over 100 to tutoring all ages in a variety of subjects. I love knowledge and I love helping others gain knowledge. Everyone has an inherent ability to learn. It is our task as educators to ensure that ability is nourished so that it may grow. My approach for tutoring is student based, meaning that I adapt to each student's individual needs. There are numerous scientific approaches to education founded on the research of individual learning styles. Utilizing a student's learning style allows me to facilitate a fun, educational, and rewarding study environment.

Math is: elegant and cumbersome, frustrating and rewarding, time consuming and expedient. Above all, math is useful. I find that connecting math to the "real world" whenever a student is struggling, bored, or both helps bring their focus back to the quest at hand: learning math. By explaining how others and myself use concepts of math on a daily basis, students are able to connect to the subject.

I am a qualified English tutor because I received As on every paper assigned during my college career. I am a great English tutor because I used to struggle to get passing grades on papers. After working hard and practicing a lot, I learned how to write outstanding essays and papers. Having overcome my struggle allows me to help others still struggling with English.

Hoping to help all age groups, K-College, in Math and English. If there's a concept you don't quite get or a subject you want to know better, I'm your girl. Dedicated and kind, I go above and beyond to ensure an awesome learning experience.

Do you have any questions about me, my profile, or how I may help? Please contact me. I am excited to hear from you and I cannot wait to start learning together.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I have composed Tuba duets, Vocal melodies, March scores, Orchestral snippets, and much much more. Most compositions were for grades, but I have continued to compose after graduating. Whether analyzing a piece or composing one, I can help. I am fluent in reading every instrument, sometimes a little rusty in tenor clef, and I am well versed in the theory that goes into musical works. My pieces have been performed in concert since I was in High School. Concert Band, Orchestral, Choral, Trios, Quartets, Duets, and most recently Solo pieces infiltrated with various harmonies stock my repertoire of composition experience.

General Music

I am a composer, a lyricist, a conductor, a music librarian, a vocalist, a pianist, a music historian, a tuba player, a flute player, an instrumentalist. All in all, I am a musician. A college degree and years of experience helped me learn what music is and how to understand it and warp it to whatever is needed. Whether Classical, Jazz, Hip Hop, or Rock, I can help anyone with whatever musical needs they may acquire. If it's Tibetan Throat Singing doubly count me in.

Music Theory

After catching the music theory "bug" in high school, I quickly became fascinated by how compositions were constructed. Music theory is a lot like math. Sometimes, tutoring music theory is about explaining that 1+1 still equals 2 even if it's in a slightly different language. Sometimes, tutoring music theory relates more advanced concepts like how matrices in music compliment matrices in calculus. Either way, I work to help students understand theory as a way to enhance, not diminish, their love of music.

Sight Singing

Over 10 years experience on a daily basis, combined with training by the top solfege ambassadors on the east coast qualifies me to teach sight singing. I have coached other individuals in sight singing, as well as teaching choirs how to sight sing. I was taught, and fully believe, that using solfege is the best approach to learning and fully understanding music. My favorite moment with solfege/sight singing occurred when a percussionist won a prestigious award, beating out pianists and vocalists. She won because she had memorized her piece using solfege and it made all the difference. Knowing how to sight sing is akin to knowing how to read. I can teach it, but you have to practice it.

Voice (Music)

I love singing. I have learned a lot of repertoire and a lot about how to sing throughout the years. I have performed in master classes, operas, musical theater shows, choral concerts, recitals, sports events, weddings, and more. I have performed for no one, and I have performed for more than 10,000 people. I am versed in all styles of music from baroque to pop and I have performed vocal pieces in over 10 different languages. Student conducting, mentoring, teaching, and helping any and all students who have a desire to learn to sing. I practice and teach vocal health first and foremost. I emphasize pitch accuracy, implement solfege, and establish proper diction in my students. Whether you want to sing Katy Perry or Mozart, I can help you be the best you can be.
