About Sarah

I have loved learning for as long as I can remember. When it came time to choose a career, teaching was an easy choice for me. I am in my second year of teaching third grade and have had various jobs in education leading up to this point. I spent several years teaching preschool, a year as a reading aide in an elementary school, and multiple years tutoring students of many different ages. My love for teaching definitely extends beyond the classroom, as I love helping individual students.

I spent two years tutoring students in grades K-6 in math through Sylvan Learning Center.

I have a Masters degree in Literacy Education. I tutor my third grade nephew in both reading and writing, and have seen a definite improvement in his grades this year. I also tutored students in grades K-12 in English at Sylvan Learning Center as well.

I have a Bachelor's in Elementary Education. My job as a third grade teacher also lends itself to my expertise in the area of elementary education. As a preschool teacher, I taught students to write the manuscript alphabet, and as a third grade teacher, I introduce my students to the world of cursive.

My goal is for students to leave their tutoring session feeling both motivated and confident in their abilities as a lifelong learner. I am available during the summer (starting June 13) during the day. I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve success in your studies!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

As a third grade teacher in my second year, I am very up to date on all that goes into common core education. Through monthly data meetings, to weekly faculty meetings, we discuss different ways to approach common core with our students.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have my bachelors degree in elementary education as well as my masters degree in literacy education. I also have my reading specialist certification. I spent two years tutoring students in grade K-12 in reading through Sylvan Learning Center. I also tutor my nephew, who is in third grade, weekly. I like to start with a few short assessments to get to know my students' abilities and then make goals for them based on those assessments. I work with the student to find activities and lessons that not only teach them but motivate them and build confidence in that subject area.

Elementary Math

As a third grade teacher, I teach elementary math daily. I am very familiar with the Pennsylvania Common Core Standards in mathematics.

Grammar

As a third grade teacher, I teach grammar on a daily basis.

Handwriting

As a preschool teacher, I taught students ages 3-5 to write manuscript letters using various methods and activities. As a third grade teacher, I teach students to write in cursive using workbooks and other activities.

Phonics

After spending years as a preschool teacher, I believe that I am extremely qualified to teach phonics. Teaching pre-reading skills, mainly phonics, is a very large part of the preschool curriculum. However, phonics continues throughout elementary school and in third grade, I teach daily phonics lessons. I am familiar with what students should know at each grade level and how knowledge of phonics will help students become better readers and writers. As with all of the students I tutor, I would begin by getting to know them and giving them a few short assessments to better understand what their needs are. I would then work to create goals that will not only help them achieve more but also help them feel more confident in that subject area.

Reading

I have my Masters in Literacy Education as well as my Reading Specialist certification. To earn this degree I participated in a Summer Reading Clinic, where I worked with one student in a tutor-like setting for six weeks in order to help them raise their reading grades. As with all of the students I tutor, I would begin by getting to know them and giving them a few short assessments to better understand what their needs are. I would then work to create goals that will not only help them achieve more but also help them feel more confident in that subject area.
