About Phyllis

I come from a family of educators, the first teaching in the 17th Century. Having been involved with students from ages 4 to 35, I too have developed a long-standing interest and engagement in learning. In addition to my enjoyment of students is my keen appreciation of the beauty of literature. I have also been fortunate to teach on the collegiate, secondary, primary levels as well as having held significant administrative positions. And for more than thirty summers, I directed a tutoring program at a Vermont summer camp on charming Lake Dunmore.

Professionally, I have taught classes devoted to the college process, concentrating on the essay and supplemental materials. Because I spent more than ten years in college admissions, I am able to explain clearly this process, thus helping to reduce the anxiety often accompanying applying to college; as an educational consultant, yet another opportunity to work individually, I thrive on these singular relationships. With a Ph.D. in English, years of teaching experience, and delight with learners, I am eager to meet you and your family.

My experience in curriculum, personal scholarship, academic training, and enjoyment in teaching align with tutoring. I also have experience as a copy editor and as a judge of creative writing contests. Living in England deepened my appreciation for all things literary. In a boarding school, I had the good fortune to work with many young women for whom English was not their first language.

I look forward to working with people who would like their writing to be vital and lucid and who would benefit from close reading of texts.

If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
