About Susan

I am a former middle school mathematics teacher with 6 years of experience in Stafford County, Virginia. I was also the math remediation coach for grades 6, 7, and 8 during the school year and during summer school programs. My Bachelor's degree is in Secondary Education with a concentration in mathematics.

I have taught students with and without special needs and with various learning styles. I enjoy being able to teach math at the level of the individual student. My teaching style includes meeting the student at his or her ability level and then building on that foundation. My goal for the student is to not only learn the material to get better grades, but also to use the material to apply it in real world applications. Math builds on itself and if students do not master the basics of mathematics, it is extremely difficult to understand higher levels of mathematics.

My favorite part of teaching is to watch "the lightbulb" go on in a child's mind when they truly understand what is being taught. I find that opportunity occurs more when a child is able to work one-on-one with someone. I would enjoy being that person for your child.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have a Bachelor's Degree in secondary education with a concentration in math. I also have 6 years of experience teaching middle school math and algebra to students in 7th and 8th grades.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have had over 15 years of mathematics teaching experience both in and out of the classroom. I have taught remediation math classes for grades 6, 7, & 8; taught Kindergarten math concepts to children in Pre-K to prepare them for the elementary school curriculum; and I have homeschooled my children since Kindergarten. They are now in 7th and 2nd grades. I enjoy breaking math down into the simplest components to help children understand math concepts. I also enjoy making learning fun by using a variety of teaching techniques including games and hands-on STEAM activities.

Wonderful tutor

Susan helped to quickly identify areas that our son needed help with and provided resources with which to help him. Her patience and obvious caring has been very valuable to the process. She consistently goes above and beyond what is necessary and we appreciate her dedication greatly. Highly, highly recommended!
