About Andrew

I have previously taught English as a foreign language in South Korea. I worked for Chungdahm April, a private English academy whose curriculum is focused on creative engagement. Last year, I learned a great deal about the education system in South Korea.

Before I taught in South Korea, I had previous classroom experience working with my university professors as a teaching assistant for three psychology courses. In this position, I managed grade books, reviewed lesson plans, and taught in the professor’s absence. I also served as a resident assistant at this time; I was responsible for the well-being of students in my residence hall, where I served as a mentor and tutor. I developed educational and cultural programming to engage students and help them adjust to life at the university. While serving as a Resident Assistant, I worked with Residence Life to expand the Cura Personalis living-learning community based on faith, justice, and service with a sophomore component.

As a foreign teacher, I taught 1st to 6th grade students. My class loads were about 30 hours a week in classes that ranged from one-on-one tutoring to fourteen students. The youngest students had limited English and were learning phonics, and the highest students were able to read about and discuss dynamic topics. When I was not teaching, my duties included managing a grade book, revising lesson plans, programming special holiday events, reviewing educational material, and coordinating with my Korean co-teachers.

I love working with younger children. I feel as though we are learning while we play. We do many activities and exercise creativity in routine projects. I have students think of their own fairy tales, draw pictures, and label photographs. We debate about baseball teams. We sing Aqua and John Denver. We create news broadcasts and advertisements.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
