About Helen

I have over 15 years experience teaching all subjects to inner city and suburban students from preschool through sixth grade. I am passionate about teaching reading and am an expert in delivering scientific based reading instruction that is effective for all types of learners.

I have specialized training in the challenges of ADHD and use an individualized approach with each student that centers on strengths and interests to make learning fun.

I have a Master's Degree in Education and am certified as an elementary teacher. I've held teaching positions in P.S./M.S. 15 in the Bronx and in Ossining Union Free School District. And I've also worked for five years as an educational consultant for many elementary schools in PA where I helped to improve literacy results.

Many of the students that I've taught have had special needs. Those with dyslexia or others with reading difficulties benefit from a systematic phonics approach. I know how to find out what skills are lacking and use explicit multi-sensory techniques to enhance learning. Those with ADHD benefit from a structured environment and a strong connection with an instructor. I have completed training on coaching students with ADHD and am able to engage them in learning.

I believe that all students can achieve great results and I strive to help each one build confidence in his/her own ability.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am a certified elementary classroom teacher with eight years experience, mostly in grades 2 through 4. Many of my students were diagnosed with ADHD. I recently completed an ICF (International Coaching Federation) approved course on coaching students with ADHD where I was required to learn the most up-to-date information on ADHD and effective strategies to help overcome the challenges those with this disorder face.

Dyslexia

I have my Master's Degree in Education and am a certified elementary teacher. My expertise is in teaching reading to students who struggle with learning to read. For those with dyslexia, I utilize a systematic phonics approach with emphasis on speech sounds, the skill known to cause difficulty for students with this disorder. In addition to working with students, I taught a college course to education majors at Kutztown University entitled Diagnostic and Remedial Reading. The focus was on assessing the specific reading problems and teaching effective instructional techniques.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a Master's Degree in Education from Manahattanville College, and am a certified teachers for grades N-6. I have held full time teaching positions in grades 2-4 and have substituted or student taught in the remaining grades.

Phonics

I have completed LETRS training (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling by Louisa Moats) in Modules 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 10. I worked as an educational consultant for five years where I provided training and coaching for teachers in phonics instruction. I was an adjunct professor at Kutztown University where I taught a beginning reading course in the elementary education department.

Study Skills

I have a Master's Degree in Education and have been a classroom teacher for 8 years. During that time I have used various study techniques to align with a student's unique learning and thinking styles for the most effective results. In addition to the techniques, I help create good study habits that include scheduling for distributed practice over time, mock test taking and what to do in the face of obstacles.
