Bio

I have been tutoring both high school and college students for 30 years. As a graduate student at the University of Georgia, I taught symbolic logic four times. Between 2009-2017 I tutored student athletes at UGA and upper and middle school students at Athens Academy. While at Athens Academy, I taught four SAT math preparation classes. While a graduate student in the mathematics department of Appalachian State University, I taught, three times, the business math with calculus course and, one time, the college algebra course. After graduating from ASU, I was hired there as an adjunct lecturer where last fall I taught two sections of college algebra and one section of precalculus. This spring I taught one section of precalculus and was also a math tutor at Wilkes Community College. This fall I am teaching two online precalculus classes for ASU as well as continuing to tutor for Wilkes Community College.

I approach mathematics more as an art than a science. Math as an art means that it is a skill perfected by practice--an "activity"--not a spectator sport. An analogy may help clarify this point: Learning mathematics is more like learning how to play tennis than it is like learning the facts of U.S. history. This approach affects my tutoring in that I try to find ways to improve the student's skills in solving problems both correctly and as efficiently as possible.

For math students: My special areas of teaching expertise include effective algebra habits, traditional algebra word problems (e.g., motion, mixture, coins, work), SAT math (including the subject tests), ACT math, logarithms, trigonometry, trigonometric limits, related-rates, optimization, l'Hopital's Rule, Riemann sums, u-substitution, trigonometric integrals, trigonometric substitution, partial fractions, sequences, series convergence tests, mathematical induction, proof-discovery strategies, and formal proof writing.

For logic students: My special areas of expertise include effective truth-table construction, truth trees, "Fitch" style proof sys

Math

Discrete Math,

Discrete Math

As an undergraduate student I took discrete math and got an A. As a graduate student in mathematics, I took a graph theory course and also got an A. I have been tutoring symbolic logic for over 30 years. I have a strong background in Boolean algebra.
Logic,

Logic

I taught approximately twelve classes in symbolic logic and critical thinking while a graduate student at the University of Georgia, and symbolic logic was my special area of study while a philosophy major. The topic of my Master's thesis concerned C.S. Peirce's Existential Graphs (a graphical logic system that looks something like Venn diagrams). I have tutored symbolic logic since 1986.

Such a Knowledgeable Teacher!

Was so willing and available to help me. Genuinely made learning Symbolic Logic, a subject I had never before taken, so easy and fun. Took all the stress out of learning and I am so so thankful to have connected with him on Wyzant. COULD NOT RECOMMEND HIM ENOUGH!

That is very good teacher

So helpful and nice. Also he is very nice to teach the student how to work out the questions. in the afternoon's online session using the WyzAnt computer interface, we used truth tables to evaluate statements with respect to being tautological, self-contradictory, or contingent; evaluate two statements whether they were logically equivalent, contradictory, consistent, or inconsistent; and finding whether an argument were valid or invalid. In addition, we went over a number of derivations, using standard rules, some of which included the special rules of conditional proof and indirect proof. Thank you!

Very understanding and patient

Richard really has gone the extra mile in both of our tutoring sessions in order to make sure I understand the material. He has been very patient and flexible in adapting to the way I have learned Logic even though it was not the exact same way as he learned and teaches. Thank you so much for being so receptive to my questions and misunderstandings Richard!

Wow!

Richard is the man! I’m not the fastest at grasping mathematical concepts and I asked Richard to “break it down Barney style,” and he was more than accommodating. He’s very patient, very thorough, and he explains the small details. I can’t recommend Richard enough. I will be seeing Richard often going forward.

Incredible Tutor

I was completely overwhelmed with an online Math class. After reading his profile I reached out to him and thank goodness I did. There is not one thing he did not know. Online classes without a teacher was a bad decision, but thanks to Richard I am able to learn and understand the problems. I will continue to use him throughout my class. There is nothing else i can say except he is everything!

Super kind and knowledgeable

Richard helped me immensely with truth tables and proofs. I look forward to meeting with Richard again if need be. Thank you for taking the time out of your day to help me!

So Patient and Helpful!

He's awesome at college level logic and is able to explain it in such a clear way! Was on track to fail before now I'm on my way to an A+! Would recommend 10/10 times
