Like most good teachers, I get results. A recent student got a 1580 on the November SAT and credited my strategies. Here is a quote from a parent: "For Reading/writing he got 750 which is 100 points more than his September score. We are sure you coaching played a major part in his improvement." Another student not only scored above average, but also got his coveted college scholarship. A middle school student went from failing English to earning a B. The success stories don't end there. One of my writing students, Emily, got second place in the 2020 Duke University TIP writing contest.

My own curriculum, taken from a variety of test preparation books and my own study of the test, teaches students to actively read and know what to expect on reading passages.

I will show your child not only what key areas to focus on in regular or double passages, but also how to manage his/her time effectively in a timed test, how to make correct inferences, how to find the main point or evidence quickly, and how to eliminate answer choices in a short amount of time using my proven and effective elimination strategies.

Each student will receive a copy of my Effective Reading and Writing/English Strategies sheets at the end of my classes to assist with mastering the test. These strategies can also be applied to a regular Language Arts class or college-level course.

Knowledgeable tutor with good teaching strategies

Barrie taught ACT English to my daughter. She liked how he would go through each practice problem whether right and wrong and asked her to explain why she chose that particular answer. She has a better understanding of grammar rules that used to confuse her previously. Total lessons 5

Fantastic Tutor!

My son finally understands the tricks to SAT Reading and Writing after only a few classes with Barrie-John. He has been going to SAT classes before, but I realized he always makes the same mistakes over and over again. Right before the October SAT, we found Barrie-John. He quickly helped my son prepare. He is a knowledgeable in the material and is very helpful. My son is very happy. We have not gotten scores back, but I am sure his score has improved.
