My experience:

I am a graduate of WGU (Western Governors University) with a BA in Educational Studies and a minor in Geosciences Education. I have experience in tutoring and teaching all grades and adults. I have 16 years of experience tutoring K-12 students in all subjects, with a concentration in science and math. I have experience tutoring reading, writing, grammar, art, and numerous vocational skills as well. I homeschooled my own children for 5 years and am familiar with what is expected. I mentored two young men from the Berlin School District for two years while they worked on their senior project. I have worked with adults who need help obtaining their GED, and students preparing for their PSAT, SAT, ACT, and ASVAB. I am familiar with many of the online educational tools and technology.

When the opportunity arises, I integrate reading and writing into the subject area being tutored. This gives the student strategies to improve self-sufficiency, increase understanding of curriculum, and build their academic confidence.

I have had the opportunity to work both in the public school and as a home-school parent and also as an educational volunteer and mentor. I look forward to helping you with your academic needs.

The following is my philosophy of teaching and learning:

Teaching is helping learners acquire knowledge. Helping them to understand the context in which it is acquired, how it was acquired it, and what we do with it afterwards. Teaching is more than just what happens in the classroom; it is the effective, humane management of complex human interaction.

As a teacher and tutor I strive to create a personal learning environment for each student that is motivating, supportive, and engaging. In addition, I want to make it challenging and inspiring. It is my responsibility to guide and nurture students and help them take ownership of their learning with pride and without hesitation.

My thinking is most in line with the constructivist view of education established by the research of Jerome Bruner, Lev Vygotsky and Jean Piaget. Essentially, constructivism declares that people construct their learning and comprehension of the world through experience and reflection. I believe that building on the students' prior experience and knowledge, whether it is a little or a lot, and scaffolding (supporting) them along their journey to become academically literate young people is an educationally sound goal. It is vitally important to create an environment where the student feels comfortable enough to ask questions, reflect on the question and then work out an answer. I believe that this is the most effective way to improve a student's comprehension, critical thinking and problem solving skills. However, having students asking questions that are investigative, philosophical or opinionated is but only one of the many ways to engage them in the learning process, but I view it as an important one. Feedback from this engagement process broadens the teacher’s understanding of the student’s interest (or lack of interest) in the subject, and whether or not the student has reached (or not reached) the appropriate skill level needed to learn new information or complete a task.

I believe a hands on approach, whenever possible, enables the student to create a link between theory and experience allowing them to become more involved in the learning process as well as increased efficacy in personal accomplishments. Hands on learning takes additional work on the teacher’s part, but the engagement with the student can create an excellent teacher-student relationship. In addition, hands-on learning is an exceptional way for a student to take ownership of his or her education.

During this process of investigation and discovery, the student will have the opportunity to display newly acquired skills, both academic and social, with appropriate growth in behavior. Indeed, I believe it is a chance for the student to communicate to the teacher who they are, what they stand for, and what learning challenges affect them. This dynamic benefits both the student (both K-12 and adult) and the teacher.

In conclusion, I believe that teaching is foremost a skill in creating a safe environment, nurturing questioning, and respecting a student’s experiences. Teaching is bringing academic best practices to the student, building relationships based on trust and good communication, and fostering the idea that education doesn't stop after graduation. Consequently, teaching is the belief in the importance of immediacy, of being a positive role model for others, and exhibiting empathy.
