About John R.

Although my degree areas are Philosophy and Religion, and my teaching certifications are for ESL, History, Math, Science and English, the actual strengths that I bring to my tutoring students are not subsumable within such degrees and certs. I am largely an autodidact polymath with broad interests from poetry and world literatures to various music traditions and world and American politics. I have worked with students from many countries, in many subject areas, for their many purposes. In tutoring, as in classroom teaching, I seek to engage the individual in pursuit of their immediate goals, but always with an eye to the whole person in their capacity for enhancing their own panoply of skills, interests, and potential.

I am 99th percentile for math on the GRE and GMAT. I started as a math major in college, before shifting to logic and philosophy. I am a PA certified middle school Math teacher.

I have taught ESL and EFL classes for many years, including at Boston University and the University of Pennsylvania. I have worked as a proctor and coach for the TOEFL and TOIEC. I also worked for ETS as a TOEFL rater for several years.

I am located in the Philadelphia, PA area

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Reading

I myself was a very high scorer on GRE and GMAT language arts and math tests. I am certified as an English, Math, Science, and History teacher in Pennsylvania. My tutoring has included American and foreign born students, and it ranges from adults to high school age students.

American History

I am certified for high school and middle school history, as well as middle school math, science and English. I also hold an ESOL certification. I have taught at universities as well as in the Philadelphia School System, and my experience has been in the U.S. and overseas, with adult students as well as young people, and in lecture, group discussion and tutoring formats.

GRE

When I took the GRE, my scores were in the top 1% nationally.

Logic

My B.A. and first M.A. are in philosophy, and include coursework in logic and mathematical logic. At the University of Toronto I was a teaching assistant for two semesters for introductory logic sections. My duties included leading small group sessions and analysis and application of Aristotelian logic.

Music History

Although I am not a practicing musician, my knowledge of music history is extensive in the areas of: European classical music from medieval through contemporary; jazz, aka creative improvisational music, from its origins through contemporary practitioners; blues, from its origins through current day revivalists and innovators; rock music, especially as derived from progressive traditions originating in the 1960's; and the art music traditions of North India, Japan and Bali. I have been a member of the Polish Jazz Society and as a graduate student in Toronto a supporting member of the New Music Concerts series. If it would aid your evaluation, I can either take a knowledge test or provide references from respected musicians and/or other professionals involved with the above areas.

Philosophy

My B.A. and M.A. are in philosophy with special attention to political thought, philosophy of religion, existentialism, and phenomenology.

Political Science

I hold PA high school level social studies teaching certificate. My Master degree in philosophy encompasses social and political thought, as well as ethics. I have taught American history and comparative political structures classes at Adam Mickiewicz University. In the past I have also been a high scorer on the American Foreign Service Officer test for political officer candidates.

While being a certified Middle School Math teacher, I am degreed in philosophy and have done logic tutoring as well.

Wonderful teacher, Knowledgeable and attentive

I took lessons to prepare for my TOEFL exam. I took some lessons with another teacher and was not satisfied at all. I then started taking lessons with John and was very happy to find a teacher who knew the subject and planned our lessons well. He is attentive, cordial, and very organized. He was always prepared for our lesson, always made sure I study for the next lesson and encouraged me to bel
