Although my degree areas are Philosophy and Religion, and my teaching certifications are for ESL, History, Math, Science and English, the actual strengths that I bring to my tutoring students are not subsumable within such degrees and certs. I am largely an autodidact polymath with broad interests from poetry and world literatures to various music traditions and world and American politics. I have worked with students from many countries, in many subject areas, for their many purposes. In tutoring, as in classroom teaching, I seek to engage the individual in pursuit of their immediate goals, but always with an eye to the whole person in their capacity for enhancing their own panoply of skills, interests, and potential.
I am 99th percentile for math on the GRE and GMAT. I started as a math major in college, before shifting to logic and philosophy. I am a PA certified middle school Math teacher.
I have taught ESL and EFL classes for many years, including at Boston University and the University of Pennsylvania. I have worked as a proctor and coach for the TOEFL and TOIEC. I also worked for ETS as a TOEFL rater for several years.

I took lessons to prepare for my TOEFL exam.
I took some lessons with another teacher and was not satisfied at all.
I then started taking lessons with John and was very happy to find a teacher who knew the subject and planned our lessons well.
He is attentive, cordial, and very organized. He was always prepared for our lesson, always made sure I study for the next lesson and encouraged me to believe in myself (which was also very helpful).
I'd highly recommend John as a tutor!
John was a great help this past week with helping me understand proofs in Symbolic Logic. He prepared by figuring out the problems before hand and then teaching me and practicing with me. I plan to continue tutoring with him this semester.
Your help is greatly appreciated John!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
