In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As the Director of Academic Affairs for a nationally/internationally known cancer center, my duties include mentoring students and junior faculty. My work involves providing coaching and support on professional attire, public speaking, interview skills, writing (e.g., cover letters and presentations, etc.). I also assist recent graduates with higher education and career planning. I am a member of several professional associations and have a vast network to assist trainees.
In the past I have worked with many people who speak English as a second language. The key to learning English is to have a great tutor. That's where I come in! Everyone I have worked with in the past has appreciated my ability to make them comfortable practicing and speaking English.
In my work I plan, coordinate and execute large scale events, which require preparing PowerPoint presentations. I often assist my colleagues who are not familiar or comfortable with setting up PowerPoint presentations. In addition to my own use and helping my colleagues, I teach the students that I mentor how to prepare and present PowerPoint presentations. I also use PowerPoint presentations for my PhD program where I have to present to my professors and classmates. Presentations with graphics, animations, videos and great color schemes can make any topic exciting to present.
As the Director of Academic Affairs for my institution, my job entails developing partnerships with academic and other institutions as well as the community at large. I often travel to schools to speak to students and educators to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education and careers. I am a Nationally Certified Bioethics Trainer, which requires my ability to present complex information in a clear and understandable way for a broad audience. I regularly train student interns in our programs on how to present research information in a public forum.
Much of the writing I do requires taking very complex concepts and making them seem simple and clear. I am a part author on two publications funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Health: 1) Your Resource Guide to Health Literacy; and 2) Your Resource Guide to Patient Navigation. Both of these guides required using my skills as a writer using Plain Language to help the average person understand the health care system and their own health. In addition to these two guides, I write extensively for work and school. I also help the students who I mentor to learn writing skills for job seeking and papers for their own classes. Writing is something I really enjoy.
