Graduate from the University of Pittsburgh (English Writing)
I am a 34-year-old Pennsylvania native and a graduate from the University of Pittsburgh with a dual BA in English Writing and Theatre Arts. A dedicated educator with over 15 years working with children, I believe that a whole-self approach is the healthiest way to learn and that may include promoting not only academic skills, but daily living skills, along with positive social and emotional awareness as well.
After having lived in Queens, NY for the past 8 years, I am thrilled to be back in the city I have always felt was my true home and excited at the prospect of working with students of all ages in the greater Pittsburgh area.
Some of my previous experiences have included: managing and teaching at an early childhood development center, teaching HeadStart programming as an Americorp member, working as a lifeguard and beginner swimming instructor, nannying, private tutoring, homeschooling, directing, and stage managing. These positions have provided me with a unique skill set and the opportunity to work with a wide variety of students and their families.
I have also had the privilege of working with autistic and other special needs students, and typically follow the lead of any learner, so that an individualized learning plan can be created to truly help a student succeed and progress.
My main strategy as a tutor is to discover individualized ways for students to be engaged, innovative, and inspired while making advancements in their studies. Working together to learn, grow, and enrich their own natural talents, I hope that students become more prepared to contribute to our increasing global community. I am very patient, easy-going, creative, and organized and strive to create an environment for learning that is relaxed and enjoyable. I would love to be considered to partner with you or your child and to help you be successful in your endeavors.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
The mother of an 8-year-old autistic son, I have first hand experience practicing patience, understanding, and supporting the needs of differently-abled learners.
Working closely with educators from one of the country's top schools for students with neurological disabilities, I completed a parental training course designed to be able to understand and implement the DIR/Floortime model, a teaching methodology that was developed by Dr. Stanley Greenspan and is a very effective means for connecting with special needs students.
While working as an early childhood educator in Queens, NY, I also taught art, music, play, and pre-school classes where I was able to alter classroom structure and management techniques, and adapt lesson plans to include the needs of special needs students.
My previous teaching experiences have allowed me to develop excellent organization and management skills, an understanding of different teaching methodologies and practices, and the patient and flexibility needed to appropriately homeschool. I have been providing at home instruction to my autistic, elementary-aged son for over 3 years. He presents with significant learning delays and requires extensive studying outside of school in order to understand and retain new information. He also benefits from having a year long program in place, so I have developed a structured curriculum to use with him during the summer months and when he is off for holidays. I am capable of adapting and creating lesson plans, developing unique and creative content, and providing hands-on enrichment activities to neurologically typical and special needs students alike.
My child, who is greatly delayed in speech and language development, as well as reading and writing ability, needed significant home instruction in phonics in order to help him speak, read, annunciate, and pronounce words.
I have spent many hours creating lesson plans and tutoring him in phonics, reading, and writing, and feel that along with my other teaching experiences, I would be more than capable of teaching elementary aged children phonics lessons.
