About Lauren

Greetings! My name is Lauren M. and I am a certified biology teacher (grades 6-12). I am currently pursuing graduate study in biology at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and spent two years teaching biology and anatomy & physiology at two Florida high schools. I tutored chemistry via WyzAnt as well, with great success.

My experience includes a year-long internship at Lake Mary High School as an anatomy intern and working as a reading, writing, and vocabulary tutor for two gifted students in Seminole county. This job was a ton of fun! However, I would love to tutor in my subject area as well - the subject I know and love, and am always learning more about: science. I have also spent a year teaching at Poinciana High School as a biological sciences teacher.

As an intern, I received Proficient and Effective ratings on every evaluation. I equipped my students with the tools they needed to find success in my class. I empowered them to take charge of their own learning and got them to think in ways that most teachers didn't. I asked them to criticize, hypothesize, and synthesize. I asked them to form their own explanations before giving them my own. In other words, I did my job well - and I want to do this one even better!

In addition to tutoring in the sciences and reading, I am also qualified to tutor pre-algebra and algebra 1. If you or your child needs help in multiple subjects, please consider my services!

Please consider me when looking for a tutor for your student. I love students of all ages and take great joy in helping them to learn, grow, and achieve their goals. All students can learn, and all students have the capacity to be curious. My goal is to bring out the best in every student I tutor. I hope you will give me the opportunity to make a difference in your student's life!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have tutored two gifted students in reading and writing from September 2013-May 2014.

I have tutored an adult employee in preparation for the reading and writing portions of the Florida Teacher Certification Exam.

I hold a BS in education from University of Central Florida.

ADD/ADHD

I have been working specifically with students who have Asperger's, autism, and ADD/ADHD for almost four years now. I have done so in my church's Sunday school facility, where I help kids in both "mainstream" classrooms and in their own classroom specifically designed for kids with disabilities.

For several months in 2012-2013, I worked as a substitute paraprofessional in various classrooms for kids with ASD. We provided patience and constant feedback for the students. What I have found very effective is keeping expectations high, but simultaneously celebrating small successes. I've also found that giving my students visuals of something to look forward to, the ability to check off what they've done, and take frequent breaks have all been good methods when teaching students with autism and other disabilities.

I also have taken several classes at UCF specifically geared toward students with exceptionalities. In fact, it was almost a minor, but UCF didn't offer the classes I needed before graduation! So, suffice to say that I have at least five classes' worth of education in this field.

Anatomy

I taught Anatomy & Physiology at a high school in Florida for one year as part of a senior internship.
I have a BS in science education - biology.

Biology

I taught anatomy & physiology for 1 year at Lake Mary HS. I majored in science education - biology at UCF. I currently tutor students in all areas of science, including biology.

English

I tutored gifted students in English and writing for a little less than a year.
Currently, I am tutoring a teacher in English, writing, and reading in preparation for the FTCE (Teacher Examination).

Physiology

Taught A&P for one school year at LMHS
Bachelor's degree in science education - Biology

Reading

Tutored gifted students for 6 months in reading, writing, and vocabulary.
Tutored an adult student in reading and English for test preparation.

SAT Reading

Tutored two gifted students in reading, writing, and vocabulary (September 2013-May 2014)

Tutored an adult student on a short-term basis to help her prepare for the reading, essay, and English portions of the General Knowledge Test for teacher certification (May 2014)
