Temple University (Master's)
Hello language students! I have always enjoyed foreign languages, especially Spanish, French and Italian. From childhood I knew I always wanted to teach. I have a Master's degree in Spanish from Temple University. I am PA certified in French and minored in Italian. I have taught in public education for 35 years, in city, archdiocese, and private schools. I also have private tutoring experience from a Pilot program teaching adult Mexicans English, to in-home tutoring of adults and children.
My focus is toward inspiring students to achieve their full potential. My talent is being able to slow things down into bite-size pieces so a student who is struggling with basic concepts can understand, succeed and master the nuances of a foreign language. This can be at an elementary level up to a salesperson going overseas for the first time dealing with cabs, hotels, menus and foreign currency. I can help as I have traveled several times to Europe, Mexico and South America.
I particularly enjoy tutoring beginning to advanced levels of ESL (English as a second language) to adults and children. My forte is with native Spanish speakers, however I can help anyone desiring to lose a foreign accent to speak, read and write American English in minimal time. This is especially important for those adults in business or industry.
I am looking forward to working with you! Hello language students! I have always enjoyed foreign languages, especially Spanish, French and Italian. From childhood I knew I always wanted to teach. I have a Master's degree in Spanish from Temple University. I am PA certified in French and minored in Italian. I have taught in public education for 35 years, in city, archdiocese, and private
Ellen started off with basics, e.g. numbers, days of the week, etc. Her explanations regarding the days of the week and the months connected to means of remembering them.
All lessons have been good. Ellen has been patient with me on the"ir-ar verbs", though it was a tough time getting the rules down for me. From our classes, I have been more observant about listening to the language in public places and on the TV cable channels. She takes the time to review our earlier lessons to see if I retained the information and, if not, we review those areas again.
I have been working with Ellen for a couple of weeks now, and I want to share what a great experience I've had so far. Ellen is friendly and warm - she is supportive of my efforts and there is never any judgement about my capabilities. Her lessons are clear and well paced for me to grasp the concepts, and her suggested homework helps to reinforce what we discuss in our sessions.
Ellen is clearly fluent in Spanish, but is great about slowing things down so I'm able to learn at my own pace. She has loaned me a couple of workbooks that I'm able to use at home, and that we work from together. Her suggestions for other learning tools, both workbooks and online, have been terrific and very helpful. I will continue to work with Ellen and am very excited about where this education will take me!
Ellen has been great with flexing to the needs and time constraints of my hectic life. In addition to being a great, and fun teacher, Ellen is also very patient with me and my requests. Ellen works well within my parameters based on knowing what I want/need to learn by a certain date for our trip to Italy! I'm so glad I found Ellen through WyzAnt! I would have never had the discipline to do this on my own, nor would I have the knowledge and understanding of the Italian language that I have now! Thank You Ellen, and WyzAnt!!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Along with helping people learn English I work with them specifically on pronunciation so they learn American English, not English with a Spanish or Indian accent, for example. I correct/explain any grammar mistakes and we practice reading and writing as well.
I am currently tutoring a few Hispanics in English. I tutored and facilitated a class in English to Mexican immigrants for 10 weeks in 2006 which was very helpful to the adult students. Over the past 3 years I have been in contact with Hispanic adults who need tutoring help and have helped them when I can. Perhaps through this service I can help them more.
Educationally I had minored in Italian in College. I have traveled several times in Italy on different touring vacations and practiced speaking as often as possible. Another occasion, on sabbatical, I lived with a family in Siena for 3 weeks and traveled a lot in Europe. I have just tutored a couple this summer in Italian for a trip they took in August, which they enjoyed very much.
I have a Master's degree in Spanish and have taught it for 35 years. I currently speak Spanish with adults I tutor and need to assist in a volunteer capacity. I have tutored and taught Spanish in many venues to adults and children.
