About David

In my experience, teachers who understand that everyone is unique and possess different strengths and weaknesses are the most effective. I understand that a one size fits all philosophy never fits quite right, so I make a point of adapting to various learning styles and trying new methods of instruction. I also strive to explain things in clear, understandable terms that the student can relate to. I am patient and motivated to help people learn and succeed. I am comfortable tutoring children to adults on a wide range of subjects including English, composition, communications, study skills, and computer and software competency.

I recently finished a one year contract at a college in Southern Virginia where I taught public speaking and ran the college radio station. Currently I teach online courses for a Western Pennsylvania community college in addition to tutoring. In the past I have worked as a substitute teacher in multiple school districts and have experience training and coaching in professional environments. I hold current State and Federal background checks.

I hold a BA and a MA in Anthropology and am in the dissertation phase of a PhD in Communications and Educational Technology.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I hold an undergraduate and graduate level degree in anthropology. I have experience with interviews, observation, and report writing in the field and am well read on the methods and theories behind the discipline. The social sciences have always been a subject of interest to me and I stay current not just on research and methodology in anthropology, but also in related fields like psychology, economics, and history.

Archaeology

I originally entered college to obtain a degree in archaeology and took courses for two years along those lines before changing my focus to cultural anthropology. The field still fascinates me and make regular efforts to stay current.

Microsoft Windows

I am a life long user of Windows, from Millennium edition to everything since. I regularly configure and customize not just my own copy, but those of several family members. I know my way around the operating system and can troubleshoot, set up wireless networks, and maximize functionality through my knowledge things like the paging file.

Music Production

I have taken music production courses and have access to a professional grade studio that I have used to work on several projects. I am well versed with Cubase, a standard professional grade DAW. I know mic placement techniques and am well versed in the pros and cons of various mics and equipment.

Photography

I designed an aesthetics course that taught students the basics of photo and video framing. This included lessons on things like lighting, the rule of thirds, and the various lenses. The camera I use is quality consumer model DSLR and I have taken photos for baby showers and other occasions in addition to my video work.

Public Speaking

In the past year I have taught seven sections of public speaking at the college level, both in person and online. I also received a grant to design and implement critical thinking lessons into my public speaking courses. Finally, I designed and implemented a college's first online session of subject.

Sociology

My PhD is in communications, a field based heavily in the Chicago School of Sociology. Most of the theories that form the foundation of communications studies were born out of sociological research. Anthropology is also a field quite heavily related, though focusing on a different set of methodologies to conduct the inquiry.

Study Skills

As both a student through three post-secondary degrees and as a teacher myself, I am well qualified to help students effective study skills. In fact, study skills is an aspect of what I teach in public speaking through an emphasis on the importance of research and preparation to succeed at speaking. This is an area that many people struggle with, but one might say that I am something of a professional given my amount of successful schooling.

Video Production

I have produced, filmed, and/or edited multiple short and feature length documentaries. I have worked in a college TV studio as both an instructor and a producer working a show that aired weekly as well as producing a PSA for the channel. I also helped to produce a script that was used in a series of promotional videos by a local public transit authority. I own some of my own production equipment and enjoy working in the field.
