About Sacha

I'm a dedicated, experienced math and science tutor who's had the privilege of teaching many diverse and bright students at the universities of McGill, Oxford, and Columbia. During my PhD at Oxford, I did college tutoring for undergraduate students in a variety of math and engineering classes, both individually and in small groups. While at McGill, I created a comprehensive set of online course notes and worked problems for a multivariable calculus class I TAed during two semesters.

My approach to teaching and learning science is efficient, practical, and results-oriented. I believe in starting from a compact set of basic principles, and learning extensively through practice and worked examples how these principles can be applied to solve many different problems. With me, you'll get the results you need by boosting your problem-solving skills and reasoning, and without having to learn stuff by rote.

I work in biomedical engineering and just finished a research position at Columbia University. My specialty is using ultrasound to diagnose aneurysms and zap cancer tumors, which means that every day I get to witness firsthand the power of math and science when applied to real life problems. I know that science can seem a bit dry in the classroom sometimes, so as a teacher I'm also very keen on transmitting my passion to others by relating what we're learning to real life applications.

Feel free to get in touch any time to discuss how I can help you get the results you're looking for! Thanks for reading!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Computer Engineering

I completed my bachelor's degree in Honours Electrical Engineering at McGill University, and received A grades in all of my computer engineering classes. I also did peer tutoring in these and other subjects in my last two years at McGill. I can tutor circuit analysis, digital system design, analog electronics, and other subjects at the first or second year level.

Computer Programming

I completed my bachelor's degree in Honours Electrical Engineering at McGill University. I received an A grade in our computer programming class, and many more of our classes involved writing code. I also code regularly in the course of my work as a biomedical engineering researcher (mostly MATLAB with some C), and I also do web design as a hobby (so I've worked extensively with PHP and Javascript).

Differential Equations

I completed my bachelor's degree in Honours Electrical Engineering at McGill University. I took an Honours differential equations class in my first year and received an A grade in it. Many of our other classes, such as signals and systems, involved the use of differential equations, so I'm also knowledgeable about the practical applications of these. I also did peer tutoring in in my last two years at McGill in differential equations and other topics.

Discrete Math

I completed my bachelor's degree in Honours Electrical Engineering at McGill University. I took several Honours math classes in my first year and received A grades in all of them. Many of our other classes, such as signals and systems, involved the use of discrete and finite math, so I'm also knowledgeable about the practical applications of these fields. I also did peer tutoring in in my last two years at McGill in engineering mathematics and other topics.

Electrical Engineering

I completed my bachelor's degree in Honours Electrical Engineering at McGill University, with a specialization in control theory. My cumulative GPA was 3.86/4.00 and I was placed on the Dean's Honour List (top 10% of the graduating class). I also did peer tutoring in in my last two years at McGill in differential equations and other topics. Since then, I've worked as a researcher in biomedical engineering at Oxford and Columbia Universities, where I've also continued to tutor in electrical engineering subjects.

Finite Math

I completed my bachelor's degree in Honours Electrical Engineering at McGill University and my PhD at the University of Oxford. During my first two years at McGill, I took several Honours math classes that covered finite math topics such as sets and probability theory, linear algebra, induction, and financial mathematics. During my PhD research in biomedical engineering, I worked with several of these topics in my research (especially linear algebra and set theory), so I'm also knowledgeable about the practical applications of finite math. Finally, I also tutored finite math and other engineering mathematics topics for 3 years at Oxford and during my last 2 years at McGill.

Linear Algebra

I completed my bachelor's degree in Honours Electrical Engineering at McGill University. I took an Honours linear algebra class in my first year and received an A grade in it. Many of our other classes, particularly linear circuit analysis as well as signals and systems, involved the use of linear algebra, so I'm also knowledgeable about the practical applications of this field. I also did peer tutoring in my last two years at McGill in linear algebra and other topics.

MATLAB

I completed my bachelor's degree in Honours Electrical Engineering at McGill University. Many of our other classes, particularly the signal processing ones, involved the use of MATLAB. Since then, I have worked extensively with MATLAB during my PhD at Oxford and as a postdoctoral researcher at Columbia University. I pride myself on writing clean code and can help with several tips, tricks, and "hacks" to make MATLAB shine for your application!

PHP

Programming is a key part of my work as a researcher and throughout my career as an electrical engineer, I've learned to code PHP mainly as a hobby and sideline. I developed a database-driven website for my current laboratory at Columbia University and also worked for 6 months with VSO in Sierra Leone to develop an electronic system for tracking NGO development. I'd be happy to help with any PHP-related development work or questions!

Regents

I completed my bachelor's degree in Honours Electrical Engineering at McGill University, and my PhD at the University of Oxford. While at McGill and Oxford I tutored extensively, including some test preparations. Since coming to New York, I've informally tutored a couple of students preparing for their Regents exams and have become familiar with the format of these exams as well. I'd love to help you get the focused preparation you need to ace them!
