I'm Emily! I graduated from Penn State University with my BA in English in 2015, and I received my Master's in English from Ohio University in 2018. I love working one-on-one with students to improve aspects of their writing needed for college-level composition, including paragraph development, thesis development, organization, research skills, and source documentation. I also focus on drafting and revision practices that involve editing on the micro-level for sentence structure, language usage, and grammatical mechanics.

I routinely remind my students that they are smart and capable. College writing isn't always about having all the right answers; it's more often about asking the right questions. My goal is to help students develop and hone that ability to ask questions, and to help them articulate their own thoughts and ideas clearly and concisely in their writing. No one is born a good writer. Writing is a skill that requires practice, just like any other!

Throughout my 2-year Master's program, I taught several sections of 1st-Year Rhetoric & Composition. In those classes, we practiced rhetorical analysis on different types of media including literature, art, and film. In addition, we practiced research strategies and different types of argument by looking at multiple perspectives on controversial topics. In my classes currently, I work closely with international and domestic students on some of the same topics, with an added focus on the editing process. The most rewarding part of teaching, to me, is getting to know my students individually so I can tailor my feedback to match their strengths and weaknesses in order for them to get the most out of my instruction.

I am one of those teachers who truly enjoys interacting with students and working together to best suit their needs. I believe the tutoring process is one where we can learn from each other, so I am always open to feedback, and I'm willing to be flexible with lessons. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or to schedule a lesson!

Writing

In my classrooms, students practice writing every day by answering journal prompts and participating in freewriting exercises. In addition, students submit major essays, which are evaluated for clear thesis statements, paragraph development, organization, tone, and grammar. I emphasize that writing is a process, and that each essay is really a series of drafts and revisions.
