About Martha

First of all, I believe all students have strengths: even if they don't see them or think their teachers see them. My goal is to show students their strengths and build on them while also working on areas that are maybe not as strong.

My thirty some years of teaching and tutoring have taught me that each student learns differently and at different paces. Some students understand ideas better when they hear them. Other students understand better when they look at an example or take notes. There is no one right way to learn, and that's one of the things I love about teaching. Meeting and working with unique people, helping them find what works for them.

I am not an editor. I DO teach students how to edit their own work, looking out always for their identified "problem" spots.

I AM a coach, a cheerleader. We will celebrate the successes, and I'll encourage you when you don't meet your own goals.

Maybe you hate grammar, but love creative writing. Time permitting, there are ways to use the one to learn the other.

Is that research assignment overwhelming? We can break it down; take it step by step; weed through all those sources to find the perfect fit. We'll set a schedule that works for you and for your due date. We can venture to the library and go beyond the mind-numbing world of all those internet sources.

We'll be a team, always making sure to meet your teacher's/instructor's requirements and deadlines.

You'll have to be ready to work, really work, but even grammar (yes, grammar) can be fun with the right tutor/partner.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
