Bilingual Doctor of Public Health Specializing in Epidemiology
Hi, I'm Rene! I graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a doctorate in Public Health, specializing in Epidemiology. I'm originally from Texas, and I'm fully bilingual in English and Spanish. Hi, I'm Rene! I graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a doctorate in Public Health, specializing in Epidemiology. I'm originally from Texas, and I'm fully bilingual in English and Spanish. I've worked with local, state and federal health agencies on infectious disease outbreaks and in updating their guidances for outbreak response. I've traveled to Puerto Rico and Colombia to chase infectious diseases like Zika and Chikungunya. Before becoming an epidemiologist, I was a clinical laboratory scientist working at a rural hospital. I worked on my own overnights collecting specimens (usually blood) and performing laboratory tests.
One of the things that I always have enjoyed is to pass on the knowledge that I've gained in the classroom and in my life. My experiences as a teaching assistant in Epidemiology and Health Communications at the graduate level made me a big believer that we all have different ways of learning things. What works for one person may not work for the next, so I try to present ideas in different ways and with different methods and technologies.
I have a bachelor's degree in medical technology. With that degree, I worked in a clinical lab performing all sorts of laboratory tests on different human samples in order to help diagnose diseases and conditions. This requires a strong knowledge of biology, microbiology, clinical chemistry, immunology, and other scientific disciplines. I also have a master's degree in Public Health, with a concentration in epidemiology and biostatistics. With that degree, I worked at a state health department and consulted with local and federal agencies on outbreak responses. That required mastery of microbiology, epidemiology and biostatistics. Finally, I recently completed my Doctor of Public Health degree. My doctoral dissertation was on the use of epidemiology and geostatistics in order to understand the epidemic of homicides in Baltimore, Maryland.
Spanish is my first language. I learned English when I was a child but spoke Spanish at home. I still maintain my Spanish skills by writing and speaking it as much as possible.

Outstanding and very patient
Rene was the most helpful, thoughtful, patient and just an outstanding tutor. He listened to my concerns and worked with me in a manner that allowed me to destress and understand what I really needed to accomplish. I will continue to work with him and build upon learning more to complete my goals.Sinuet, 7 lessons with Rene
Rene is a phenomenal tutor. During our session covered the steps in performing a meta-analysis, discussed relative risk and odds ratios, and looked at the various research design studies. Rene has a unique way of breaking down large concepts into digestible units within a short period. He was able to pack four weeks of information into a one-hour session. Phenomenal!Darlene , 3 lessons with Rene
Not patient tutor
I logged in late due to technical issues. I was disappointed because I did not ask for cancelation and he left already. When I logged in, Rene was not there. He asked me to pay the cancelation fee! I think this is not the right thing to do because he is the one who canceled the session!Sal, 1 lesson with ReneTutor responded:
The lesson was supposed to begin at 9pm. By 9:20pm, the student had not logged in, nor did they take the time to communicate that they were having technical issues. At 9:21, I emailed the student to notify them that I was ending the lesson and logging off for the night. At 9:32, the student emailed me that they were having technical issues. At 9:42, the student emailed me again that the issues were resolved and demanded a lesson start at that time, nonetheless.
Very knowledgeable on the subject matter
I appreciate his ability to cover a broad overview of the material while attending to my specific areas of concern. Understands the challenges I am going through!Rebecca, 1 lesson with Rene
Knowledgeable and motivating tutor
We reviewed some necessary measures of association in epidemiologic studies. Specifically, we focused on particular study designs (e.g., case-control, nested case-control, and cohort studies) and the application of odds ratios and risk ratios or relative risk in analysis and interpretation.Joshua, 1 lesson with Rene
I now have a better understanding of the differences between attack rates and incidence rates. He gave some pretty good pointer on telling the difference between rates and the differences between the different epi curves.Nekole, 1 lesson with Rene
Extremely knowledgeable and easy to work with!
I have not had a math class in close to 20 years and René was able to guide me through a lesson with ease. With further lessons I feel I will do fine in my Biostatistics graduate course.Lisa , 4 lessons with Rene

He was very patient and found diverse ways to explain things to me. I highly recommend Rene and he is very easy to work with! I look forward to using him again and he really makes the content exciting to learn about.Ben, 8 lessons with Rene
Excellent tutor with patience, flexibility and a great sense of humor
Rene was very patient whenever any tech issues occurred and always found a way to make sure I understand the content. As someone who has never been exposed to Epidemiology course work before grad school, Rene did an excellent job ensuring that I understood the concepts. I plan to continue to work with Rene next semester.Damien, 11 lessons with Rene
knowledgeable and patient
really assisted in making sure that i understood the concepts behind the case study - was very patient as my math ability is limited, took time to assist in teaching me how to plot an epi curve and really understand the attack rate - (and all formulas needed throughout study)Samantha, 17 lessons with Rene
