ABOUT ME:
I have recently graduated with my Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy at The University of Rochester. My previous educational achievement is a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Eastern Michigan University. My minor as an undergraduate required a mix of sociology and anthropology courses. Therefore, I feel confident in my ability to tutor sociology, psychology, and several other subjects.

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE:
During my undergrad, I spent two years working at Eastern Michigan University’s Success Center as a Supplemental Instructor. In this position, I ran group study sessions for the undergraduate statistics course that was required for the psychology major. Additional drop-in tutoring hours were available for students to receive one-on-one attention and gain confidence in their mastery of coursework. Throughout the class that I tutored for and my experience as a research assistant, I became very familiar with SPSS and feel confident in my ability to help others understand how to use this computer program as a statistical tool.

I was also enrolled in several courses that included writing as a substantial portion of the coursework. As a heavily involved honors student and research assistant, I wrote a Senior Honors Thesis. I spent roughly six months reading and researching followed by six months of writing and editing for this project. My thesis is a substantial piece of academic writing through which I am able to demonstrate my writing ability as well as my understanding of how essential editing and re-writing is within the writing process.

TUTOR/MENTOR PHILOSOPHY:
I am passionate about mentoring students so that they may be successful in their pursuit of education and become more confident in themselves along the way. As an honors college graduate and current graduate student, I know that active learning takes hard work, motivation, and confidence to problem-solve when you hit the inevitable bump in the road. I hope that by working together we can figure out the best way to jump over or go around the bump in your educational journey.

If you or someone you know would benefit from working with me based on my skills and experiences outlined above, please feel free to contact me. As a student myself, I am in classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I would happy to make arrangements to tutor during the rest of the week and for a few hours on weekends though. Please feel free to contact me to start a conversation about what will work best for both of us!

I believe in mentorship relationships and instilling confidence in any learner. Learning is a life-long process and can be done collaboratively. Let's learn together!

I have been using Microsoft Outlook for several years. I have used it mainly for my emails. I know how to create contacts, see new emails, send emails, and create folders to organize emails. I also know how to flag emails, delete emails, add high importance tag, and attach files to an email. I know how to format the text and font in an email as well as how to create an email signature. Finally, I know how to manage appointments and tasks on the Calendar feature.

Study Skills,

Study Skills

During my undergrad, I spent two years working at Eastern Michigan University’s Success Center as a Supplemental Instructor. In this position, I ran group study sessions and held drop-in tutoring hours. In addition to working on specific class assignments, a large portion of time was spent teaching and building study skills. I usually gave students a small questionnaire to begin to see what type of learning style works best for them. Then knowing that, I was able to cater to their preferred learning style and they were able to make better judgements about what types of studying would work best for them. For visual learners, drawing pictures or graphs is useful. For visual and/or auditory learners, watching youtube tutorials may be useful. For students that have difficulty concentrating, I use apps such as 30/30 or computer applications that block the use of social media sites for a set amount of time. I have an toolbox full of study skills that I use personally (as a graduate student currently) and that I have seen others use successfully. This makes me believe that I am qualified in "study skills".

English was always my strongest subject in school and I love to read and write! I have a lot of experience with writing as I have written 2 theses in my college education.

Writing

I have completed various types of writing assignments throughout my undergrad (research papers, persuasive papers, reflections, opinion papers, op-eds, etc.). I also completed an senior thesis during my undergrad. Now, as a grad student, I am still writing various pieces for classes. And I often get asked to read over and give feedback on friends papers, resumes, or personal essays when applying for school or jobs. I enjoy giving feedback and find value in getting another set of eyes on my own papers as well as others.
