Over the past few years I have had the privilege to evolve as an educator through extensive experience in a number of fields and environments. I have worked as an English language teacher in a small town in Costa Rica, a personalized tutor in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia, as well as a classroom manager and after-school teacher in upper Harlem working through the world-renowned program Harlem Children's Zone. This past summer I worked as student-teacher at Columbia University’s Community English Program through their internationally recognized TESOL Certificate program. In the Columbia English Program I worked closely with adult students from a variety of cultural backgrounds including Japanese, as well as Brazilian and Israeli. Throughout these experiences I have implemented a comprehensive knowledge base of effective teaching strategies in my classrooms and have improved student success with proven test scores.
In each of these positions, I have advised students and colleagues alike while wearing a number of hats daily. At a children’s academy I closely attended to between thirty to forty students daily in a remarkably fast-paced efficient environment demanding enthusiasm, physical labor, as well as unyielding professionalism and respect. As a teacher and tutor, I continually make class period interesting and engaging for students and will cater to various behavioral and social challenges with this same respect, attentiveness, and care. I can attribute this approach to an inner passion for teaching that will lead to plentiful success of students.
As a recent recipient of a TESOL certificate from Columbia University, I have also implemented a vast network of pedagogical theory that has been advanced by collective studies over the past several centuries. Through this empirical knowledge, I have proved a successful motivator, goal-oriented leader, and impassioned teacher.
As a tutor through WyzAnt I commit this same empirical knowledge and effectiveness to learners, proving a critical leader and academic authority, as well as an extremely reliable and enthusiastic representative of the organization. I look forward to meeting you and your students to make the most profound difference in each of our lives. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been playing piano for 12 years and have over 8 years of classical training experience which involved extensive scale and arpeggio practice. Throughout my history as a pianist I have memorized and performed a number of pieces to large audiences, including weddings and recitals. As a piano teacher, I have taught several students between the ages of 7 and 12 as a substitute for my mother, a piano teacher in the suburbs of Glenside. Through this upbringing, as well as my own training as a student, I have developed a certain strength that I continue to use for beginners and intermediate students of all ages.
