I am a a experienced teacher, retired, with a background in Reading K-12 and Language Arts along with writing and vocabulary. My teaching experience spans 35 years, and my focus was always on helping students to read. My first goal was to obtain a Master's in Reading and Language Arts. I have taught Elementary as well as in Secondary- Reading and English. I have a background in Secondary English and writing. For the past 15 years, I did outside tutoring for my school district, some paid, and some was on my own to help students that could not achieve in school. Working one-on-one with students is extremely helpful for the student; it gives undivided academic time for the student and helps the tutor to assess and work strengths. It's very rewarding to see when the student actually understands and is able to demonstrate learning and build on those skills. This is what teaching is about and definitely why I chose to become a teacher.
I have taught English in many different school districts. In the past, English was grammar and vocabulary, reading novels, and possibly some writing. Now, teachers are following Common Core lessons and students are assessed according to the Keystones. My background in Reading has always been effective when teaching English since reading is the core of English. Motivating students to read, helping those that have difficulty reading, and finding ways to keep the students interested in the material have been the focus the past several years. It's not an easy task, but one that I accept and take on willingly.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
