About Betty

As a a retired teacher with over 25 years of experience, I am committed to the success of each student. I specialize in teaching students with learning disabilities and also with ESL students. Most of experience was working with students who were preforming below grade level benchmarks. It has been a passion of mine to find a way to connect with each of my students. Across the years I developed strategies to discover my students' learning styles, strengths, weaknesses, and interest levels. This meant my students were fully engaged, motivated, and focused on their own success. How exciting!

I tutor students in all subjects areas for grades 1-6. I work with students in Reading, Social Studies, and Writing. Most of my years in the classroom were spent teaching Reading, English grammar, and Writing. I am also an expert in teaching students strategies for test taking, organization, and study skills.

I am willing to meet in public libraries, coffee shops, or other locations. Although I have a 24 hour cancellation policy, I am willing to schedule make-up lessons. I have very high expectations for my students and give challenging homework to reinforce the skills taught for each lesson. I enjoy creating lessons that match each child's personal learning style, whether it be visual, auditory, kinestetic, or multi-sensory.

I am excited about helping students gain success, confidence, and hope. When students begin to experience success, especially as a result of their own hard work, they become confident and more certain they can continue to be successful. That is the end goal. Success breeds success. I look forward to meeting you and making a difference in your child's life.

I have over 25 years as a Reading and English teacher, ten of which was at the middle school level. I taught English and Reading to primary children in grades 1-6. In addition I taught English to ESL students for many years. A lot of my expertise was developed while working with groups of students at multiple ability levels. Adapting my instruction to meet the needs of all students was a daily task. Finally, my instruction as a middle school Communication Arts teacher included daily Grammar, Writing, and Reading instruction.

All 28 years of my teaching career were with students in grades K-6. Specifically, I spent most of my years teaching grade 6 Communication Arts (English, Grammar, Writing). I also worked with students in grade one. Teaching beginning Reading and watching students start with alphabet letters in September and then hearing them read over 100 or more words per minute by June was by far one of the most exciting parts of my career. Teaching Spanish speaking first graders learn to read in a language different than their language of origin was especially exciting. Teaching and reteaching my students neat Handwriting was an ongoing process no matter what grade I taught.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

With over 25 years of public school classroom teaching experience in grades K-6 I am more than qualified to teach this age group. I specialized in teaching Reading, Grammar, Writing, and English. While teaching Communication Arts as a grade 6 teacher, I was asked to collaborate on writing new curriculum which was designed to meet Pennsylvania Department of Education's state standards. It was subsequently implemented district wide. I have a B.A. in Elementary Education, as well as 24 additional credit hours from Penn State University in Curriculum and Instruction. While teaching, all my lessons were differentiated to meet the individual needs of each student. I was also an after school tutor for students who were not proficient in Reading or Math. Our goal was to create lessons that helped move students up to grade level benchmarks. All these experiences make me an outstanding instructor for any subjects at the elementary level.

Reading

I have many years of Language Arts instruction which includes, Reading, Grammar, English, and Writing. I love to design lessons that meet the needs of all my students and have also enjoyed tutoring students one-on-one. My goal was and has always been tailoring my lessons to each child's learning style and interest levels. I use a variety of presentation methods to retain your child's attention and interest. I look forward to helping your child feel more successful.

Writing

As a middle school Communication Arts teacher for many years, I spent a good portion of my time teaching students how to write. My students learned how to write all different types of essays from creative stories to expository essays. I also taught my students how to write to different types of audiences. I look forward to helping your family member receive the proper instruction so that they can meet their academic goals.
