About Melissa

I have been very successfully teaching Elementary Education in the public school system for the past five years, primarily teaching grades K-4. I also have many years of experience (through teaching and tutoring) with Kindergarten preparation, phonics, math, reading and writing through the middle school level.

Some of the families with whom I have worked most closely in their homes have had children diagnosed with ADD/ADHD or Austism Spectrum Disorders. I also have experience working at a tutoring center, where I tutored children and adults of all ages and in multiple subjects, some of which had special needs.

Over the last two years, I have developed a K-3 problem-based enrichment program for an elementary school in order to provide academic extensions and opportunities to develop critical and creative thinking skills.

I have a great love for teaching and enjoy finding the style of my student in order to determine the most efficient ways for him/her to learn. My students say that I'm fun, kind, and help them to think for themselves, and make them want to learn more on their own. Their families say that I consistently communicate successes, struggles, tips, and strategies with them have a lot of flexibility in my schedule. They can count on me to make every minute worthwhile. You will find that I have excellent references to share.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

As an experienced teacher, I have had a number of students with ADD/ADHD, some who struggled in class and some who were identified as gifted. I also worked at a tutoring center, where I taught a program designed to help increase the focus and attention of these children.

Aspergers

I was a therapeutic staff support for three young children diagnosed with autism. For a year, I went to their homes and schools to help them and their families find strategies to help coach their behaviors. I assisted with verbal development, grammar, social interactions, and sensory issues. I worked with a Behavioral Specialist to determine the best course of care and track progress. I attended many professional development seminars on communication and behavior. One of these boys had Aspergers. I have also taught students with Aspergers in my K-3 Enrichment program that I developed for an elementary school.

Cooking

I enjoy cooking and do so regularly. I use multiple cooking methods and am familiar with how to use many spices. In high school, I took a cooking course during which I had to put on a cooking show to teach the prep methods I was using. I also sell Pampered Chef and host cooking shows through this consulting business.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified K-6 teacher in PA and NC. I have five years experience in the public school teaching grades K-4 primarily. I have student-taught in 5th grade, and I have tutored middle school students as well.

Phonics

I have been tutoring phonics for many years. I also have been incorporating it in all elementary school age-groups over the last five years, particularly as a first grade teacher.

I typically begin by ensuring mastery of all letter sounds, followed by closed syllables, blends, digraphs, and 'glued' sounds. As new rules are learned, I help my students to memorize the rule-breaking words associated with it.

I also taught the Wilson Reading phonics program at a tutoring center to many students, including some adults.

Praxis

I am a certified teacher and passed the Praxis test with a 99% score. I have been teaching Pre-K through elementary during the last seven years and have been in a resource position to assist other teachers in my school.

Special Needs

I spent a year as a therapeutic staff support working with three young children diagnosed with autism. As a classroom teacher, I have had many special needs in my classes in addition to autism, like ADD/ADHD and a number of learning disabilities. This includes ages 2-10.

Study Skills

I have a a few years of experience preparing 3rd and 4th grade students in the classroom and through tutoring for the first End of Grade tests. I have many strategies on how to prepare for a test, check over a finished test and answer questions in both reading and math.
