During the past two and a half years, my tutoring experiences have been with students taking Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, and Algebra II. In addition, I am involved in ongoing tutoring using the Wilson Reading System with an upper elementary student.

More than twenty years of teaching have provided me with the opportunity to incorporate my interest in lifelong learning, of which reading is a major component. In addition, teaching has engaged my problem solving skills to (1) create lessons and activities that build on prior learning, (2) promote understanding and application of new material, and (3) identify accommodations and modifications that can benefit each student. I believe firmly that all students can achieve success and increase their confidence in their abilities to be successful. For me, the reward of teaching is witnessing a student's positive response to his or her increased capability in a subject.

My Pennsylvania certifications are in English, Special Education, and Elementary Education. My teaching experiences have been with students from preschool through college, primarily in a public high school for more than fifteen years. I taught English 10, English 11, and English 12 in both the small-group setting for students identified with learning disabilities and in the co-taught/inclusion setting [typical students and students with learning disabilities]. Furthermore, I used the Wilson Reading System with high school students who experienced significant reading difficulties. Additionally, I hold the status of Highly Qualified in Mathematics, which enabled me during my years in a public high school to teach Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, and Business Math in the small-group setting for students identified with learning disabilities and in the co-taught/inclusion class setting [typical students and students with learning disabilities] for Algebra I and Algebra II.

I am retired from public education, so I have availability during weekdays and weekends for tutoring sessions. I would be happy to meet with you and discuss the subject(s) of concern to you and how I might best be of assistance to you.

Grammar

During the past 15+ years as a learning support teacher, I have taught English 10, English 11, and English 12 in a public high school. For each of these courses, the Daily Warm-Up was a grammar activity. Rules learned during the Grammar Warm-Ups were expected to be applied in all writing tasks for these English courses, whether single sentences or multi-paragraph essays. In the state of Pennsylvania, one of my certifications is in English.

Algebra 1

During the past 15+ years as a learning support teacher, I have taught ninth through twelfth grade students in a public high school in both English and math. My math experience has been primarily in Algebra I, occasionally Algebra II, Geometry, and Business Math. During the past eleven years, in order to increase my knowledge and application of mathematics, I completed four math courses at the college level: Introduction to Statistics, Trigonometry, College Algebra II and Analytic Geometry, and Calculus I.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

During the past 15+ years as a learning support teacher, I have taught ninth through twelfth grade students in a public high school in Math. My math experience has been primarily in Algebra I, therefore I have a clear understanding of the vocabulary, concepts, and problem solving strategies students in Pre-Algebra need to acquire in order to be successful in the next level, Algebra I. This school year, I have been tutoring a nephew in Pre-Algebra, so I have first-hand knowledge of the curriculum.

Friendly Tutor

My son has tutored with Susan (2) times so far. From day one he was very comfortable with her. He has told me she is very nice, and she has made him feel comfortable, and that is not always easy with a teenager. He really likes her, and the best part is he understands her way of teaching.

Julie, 7 lessons with Susan

Susan continues to do a wonderful job.

Susan is doing a wonderful job helping my daughter understand Algebra. She is very patient and very good at explaining things in a way my daughter can understand.
