About Susan

More than twenty years of teaching has provided me with the opportunity to incorporate my interest in lifelong learning, of which reading is a major component. In addition, teaching has engaged my problem solving skills to (1) create lessons and activities that build on prior learning, (2) promote understanding and application of new material, and (3) identify accommodations and modifications that can benefit one, several, or many students. I believe firmly that all students can achieve success and increase their confidence in their abilities to be successful. For me, the reward of teaching is witnessing a student's positive response to his or her increased capability in a subject.

My teaching experience has been with students from preschool through college, with most of the years in a public high school teaching English and Math in small-group settings for students with learning disabilities and also, co-teaching in regular English and Math classes. Intermittent private tutoring experience has been with middle school and high school students in Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, and reading comprehension. My Pennsylvania certifications are in English, Special Education, and Elementary Education.

In Pennsylvania, I hold the status of Highly Qualified in Mathematics, which enabled me during more than fifteen years in a public high school to teach Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, and Business Math in the small-group setting for students identified with learning disabilities and in the co-taught/inclusion class setting [typical students and students with learning disabilities] for Algebra I and Algebra II.

In Pennsylvania, I am certified in English. During more than fifteen years in a public high school, I have taught English 10, English 11, and English 12 in both the small-group setting for students identified with learning disabilities and in the co-taught/inclusion setting [typical students and students with learning disabilities].

Recently, I retired from public education, so I have availability during weekdays and weekends for tutoring sessions. I would be happy to meet with you and discuss the subject(s) of concern to you and how I might best be of assistance to you.

During the summer 2015 as a public school teacher, I obtained the following clearances in Pennsylvania: Child Abuse History and Criminal Record Check. Furthermore, I obtained clearance through the FBI Criminal History Record Check.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

During the past 15+ years as a learning support teacher, I have taught ninth through twelfth grade students in a public high school in both English and math. My math experience has been primarily in Algebra I, occasionally Algebra II, Geometry, and Business Math. During the past eleven years, in order to increase my knowledge and application of mathematics, I completed four math courses at the college level: Introduction to Statistics, Trigonometry, College Algebra II and Analytic Geometry, and Calculus I.

Algebra 2

During the past 15+ years as a learning support teacher, I have taught ninth through twelfth grade students in a public high school in Math. My experience in Algebra II has been in both the small-group setting and the co-taught/inclusion classroom. As part of my goal to continually increase my knowledge and application of mathematics, I have completed four math courses at the college level, including a course titled College Algebra II and Analytic Geometry.

Grammar

During the past 15+ years as a learning support teacher, I have taught English 10, English 11, and English 12 in a public high school. For each of these courses, the Daily Warm-Up was a grammar activity. Rules learned during the Grammar Warm-Ups were expected to be applied in all writing tasks for these English courses, whether single sentences or multi-paragraph essays. In the state of Pennsylvania, one of my certifications is in English.

Prealgebra

During the past 15+ years as a learning support teacher, I have taught ninth through twelfth grade students in a public high school in Math. My math experience has been primarily in Algebra I, therefore I have a clear understanding of the vocabulary, concepts, and problem solving strategies students in Pre-Algebra need to acquire in order to be successful in the next level, Algebra I. This school year, I have been tutoring a nephew in Pre-Algebra, so I have first-hand knowledge of the curriculum.

Reading

During the past 15+ years as a learning support teacher, I have taught English 10, English 11, and English 12 in a public high school, in both small-group settings and in co-taught/inclusion class settings.

I have worked with small groups of students to prepare for state tests (PSSA and Keystone) in the areas of Reading and English.

I have experience using the Wilson Reading System with small groups of students with significant reading disabilities.

In the state of Pennsylvania, one of my certifications is in English.

Friendly Tutor — My son has tutored with Susan (2) times so far. From day one he was very comfortable with her. He has told me she is very nice, and she has made him feel comfortable, and that is not always easy with a teenager. He really likes her, and the best part is he understands her way of teaching. ...
