University of Maryland (Reading)
Hello, my name is Brecca, and I am a former elementary teacher and reading tutor. I have completed the majority of my training as a reading specialist and have taught reading methods courses to pre-service teachers. I am currently writing my dissertation on metacognition in primary reading. I am looking forward to tutoring part time because I miss teaching!
My basic plan for tutoring follows a cycle of assessment and instruction based on a framework of local and state standards. I like to start with an assessment of multiple reading skills. Then I compose a plan and share it with parents. I provide a full hour of instruction and keep very detailed progress notes. The progress notes inform my ongoing planning.
I am equally qualified to help children crack the codes of phonics and engage in higher order comprehension processes. The pre-assessment data that I collect will help me determine what your child needs. I am also interested in hearing your opinions and any information from the school that you would like to share.
Please note that I request that a parent be present during tutoring. For example, you could work in the kitchen while we read at the kitchen table. I enjoy providing parents with progress reports. I also try to point out different approaches to different reading tasks. Former clients have told me that they appreciated the chance to view their child’s performance from this perspective. I do not charge for planning, grading, and conferencing with parents and teachers. For each lesson, I typically spend approximately 30-45 minutes performing these tasks.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have over 10 years of experience teaching from Pre-K to college. I hold full elementary certification in Maryland (certificate available upon request). I am currently conducting my doctoral dissertation study on the development of text comprehension in preschool children. I am qualified to tutor in any elementary subject using literature, manipulatives, and child-centered methods.
I am highly qualified to teach phonics through my education and training. I am knowledgeable of the National Reading Panel's recommendations concerning phonics and phonemic awareness. I have been trained to assess, teach, and remediate in phonics and phonemic awareness. Phonics includes work in phonemic awareness (identification, substitution, deletion, addition, and blending of individual phonemes), phonograms or word families, blends, digraphs, and short, long, and more complicated vowel patterns such as diphthongs.
I have taught and tutored from K-adult. I can teach the reader the study skills that work best when reading to learn, based on the genre and task characteristics. I am familiar with a variety of techniques including 4 types of vocabulary cards, SQ3R, double-entry journals, and self-questioning.
