Hello! I'm Andrew, and I have been interested in film studies since I began writing movie reviews for my high school newspaper. Hello! I'm Andrew, and I have been interested in film studies since I began writing movie reviews for my high school newspaper. I have always greatly enjoyed helping others gain a better understanding of topics that I love, and film is first and foremost among them. I think the cinema is an essential medium that is at once an art form, a mode of communication, an entertainment, and a historical document providing insight into the cultural context of its creation. I also think studying film is a great way to learn and enhance one's critical thinking, writing, and case-making skills--and it can be a heck of a lot of fun!

In the range of teaching I have done over the years, there is one thing that has always motivated me to work with students to help them gain the understanding they seek, and it is the look in one's eye when she or he has that first spark of recognition of a new concept, fact, or approach to thinking about film. Students are always pleasantly surprised when they begin to learn just how much there is to consider and engage with about movies, and I love helping students access that surprise, and facilitating their continued journey through the field of film studies.

I earned a B.A. in American studies (with certificates in film studies and journalism) at Brandeis University; got my M.A. in communication studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and pursued my Ph.D. in the Department of Radio/Television/Film at Northwestern University. My specialties are American film history, genres, and film analysis/theory, but I am well versed in many aspects of cinema. During my graduate studies, and since I completed my doctorate, I have been teaching high school, college, and adult students about film and media in a wide variety of settings, including area colleges, universities, and in my role as director of education at a non-profit film center.

I have a Ph.D. in film and media studies from Northwestern University and have been teaching college students and adult learners for over 20 years. For the last 13 years I have been the director of education at a non-profit film organization and have taught and worked with hundreds of high school, college, and adult students during this time, while also teaching the occasional film class at area colleges and universities. I have presented papers at some of the most prestigious conferences in the field of academic film studies and have had book reviews published in some of the discipline's top journals. My focus and area of expertise is American cinema of the sound era (post 1927).
