About Heather

Hello, my name is Heather and I am 23 years old. I graduated from Pennsylvania State University in May 2014 with a B.S. in Chemistry. Immediately after graduation I was employed at Teleflex International as a laboratory technician. Currently I'm a Process Development Technician at Johnson Matthey where I work on technologies targeting catalytic converters. Even though I love my job, I have realized that I did not want to spend the rest of my life bent over a lab bench. Therefore, I turned to my next passion in life, becoming an educator. Therefore, for my future I am striving to attain my Master’s in Chemical Education. When I was a little girl and even now; I enjoy reading, writing, and studying on my own. I used to create my own mock exams to study my progress, which assisted me in attaining honors throughout my primary and secondary education.

Other than teaching myself, I have plenty of teaching experience inside a classroom. During my first two years at college I became a teaching assistant for the general chemistry courses, working with my peers. I was also heavily involved with the start of the Penn State Berks Chemical Society student organization on campus, becoming Publicity Representative and Vice President. Through these roles I participated in educational demonstrations, teaching students of all ages about chemistry. However, chemistry is not the only subject I have a passion for; in 2010 I was featured in Penn State's Best of Freshman Writing Vol. 16. By making this achievement, it encouraged me to take creative writing courses and attain my TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certification. I think that attaining new knowledge in different but effective ways is a fun way to learn and as a future educator I want to encourage students to enjoy learning as much as I do.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemistry

I began studying at Penn State Berks, where I became a key member in starting the Penn State Berks Chemical Society (a student organization), where I was Publicity Representative and Vice President. The Penn State Berks Chemical Society is based upon educating our community. Through my involvement, I spent hours volunteering to help students of all ages learn about chemistry. Many of these volunteering experiences, involved working with local Girl Scout troops and children at the local library through demonstrations and educational talks. As a part of my involvement with the society I was also involved in PEPP (Penn State Educational Partnership Program), which allowed me to visit local high schools and talk with students about careers in the sciences, as well as help them in their studies. As a result of my heavy involvement in education I became a Chemical Education Ambassador for the American Chemical Society. In addition, I was a teaching assistant for the general chemistry courses on campus, where I would help students understand basic chemistry concepts, offering my assistance after class and before exams to review the materials.

Organic Chemistry

My B.S. is in general chemistry in which I took 2 general organic chemistry classes focusing on mechanisms and spectroscopy. In addition with an organic laboratory, in which we performed several synthesis reactions, distillations and extractions. During my senior year I took an advanced organic mechanisms course as well as an Advanced Analytical spectroscopy course that focused on several organic practices; NMR, FTIR, UV-VIS, MS, etc. which also contained the subject of my graduating project of identifying an unknown sample.
