About James

Bio

After spending much of my career in research, I am now taking the lessons I have learned "out there" and bringing them to the students. As a graduate I discovered my love for helping others understand the area I enjoy so much. As a teacher at the college level, and a tutor for all types of students, I am challenged by students who are afraid of chemistry, saddened by students who have less than excellent chemistry teachers, and determined to help them all overcome these hurdles.

Since leaving the world of industrial research, I've had the pleasure of helping more students than I can count learn not just chemistry, but to be confident in their ability to face and solve the tasks they are assigned. My greatest joys are when I hear back from former students, sometimes years later, and they tell me of their success in academics. I am always happy to know that I have helped each student, in some small way, realize their dreams.

My many years of experience in different fields of chemistry research, coupled with my classroom experience teaching at the college level, allows me to see what a student is facing in both the near term (the current class) but what will be useful in the longer term. Working with students in a one-on-one format for most of the last decade has sharpened my sense of where an individual is struggling, even when the student cannot figure out what the problem is.

I'm always excited to work with new students, no matter what level of chemistry they are working on. From honors high school chemistry to college level organic courses, it's my pleasure to help!

Great teacher!

Jim does a great job actually teaching chemistry - my son loves him! He does a great job walking through step by step and teaching - not just giving answers. Love his availability and flexibility.

Great teaching approach

James focuses on the mastery of basics that are so important in chemistry. This helps to focus a difficult subject so that understanding is the goal, rather than just memorization.

Very Knowledgeable Yet Relatable and Patient

James is relatable! My son preferred him when given a choice. He's smart, funny, and down to earth. He's easy to work with and actually cares about your child learning the material. It's clear that it's not "just about the money" for him. He actually has a vested interest in your child grasping what's being taught.
