About James

After spending much of my career in research, I am now taking the lessons I have learned "out there" and bringing them to the students. As a graduate I discovered my love for helping others understand the area I enjoy so much. As a teacher at the college level, and a tutor for all types of students, I am challenged by students who are afraid of chemistry, saddened by students who have less than excellent chemistry teachers, and determined to help them all overcome these hurdles.

Since leaving the world of industrial research, I've had the pleasure of helping more students than I can count learn not just chemistry, but to be confident in their ability to face and solve the tasks they are assigned. My greatest joys are when I hear back from former students, sometimes years later, and they tell me of their success in academics. I am always happy to know that I have helped each student, in some small way, realize their dreams.

My many years of experience in different fields of chemistry research, coupled with my classroom experience teaching at the college level, allows me to see what a student is facing in both the near term (the current class) but what will be useful in the longer term. Working with students in a one-on-one format for most of the last decade has sharpened my sense of where an individual is struggling, even when the student cannot figure out what the problem is.

I'm always excited to work with new students, no matter what level of chemistry they are working on. From honors high school chemistry to college level organic courses, it's my pleasure to help!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I have been tutoring ACT prep since 2010. I have worked with test prep companies (Study Point and Huntington Learning), as well as going solo, so I have seen a number of approaches to helping the student learn. I can bring any of them to aid a student in whatever way is most effective.

ACT Science

I really enjoy the Science section as it involves integrating several types of analysis to solve answer the questions. Data analysis, critical reading skills, inference from partial data, extrapolation and interpolation are all areas that are needed to score the highest grade in the ACT.

Chemistry

I have been an SAT Chemistry & AP Chemistry tutor since 2011. My academic training is a Ph.D. in natural products total synthesis U. Pittsburgh, followed by postdoctoral experience at the University of Pennsylvania and at U. Michigan in synthesizing isotopically labelled compounds. I spent nine years analyzing data generated in research. Most recently I have been teaching college General and Organic Chemistry since 2011 at Reading Area Community College and Delaware County Community College.

Organic Chemistry

My academic training is a Ph.D. in natural products total synthesis U. Pittsburgh, followed by postdoctoral experience at the University of Pennsylvania and at U. Michigan in synthesizing isotopically labelled compounds. I then joined SmithKline Beecham (later became GlaxoSmithKline) in the Research Data Management group, where I spent 9 years analyzing data generated in the research division.
